Wheelchair maintenance is just part of life now. I’ve learned how to do some things for myself (or able to direct someone how to do it) to save a little bit of time and frustration (IYKYK). And, I try to split the tasks up so they don’t feel like such a burden.

SCI Awareness Month 💖 I use 3 types of catheters on the regular to help manage my bladder. I made a full youtube video about it last year that you can access through the link in my bio. This is just a quick video I did that quickly explains where I use each type of catheter. 💖 If you are like me, you get out in the world and experience all you can. The world, however, is not very accessible, so finding a bathroom that I can safely transfer onto the toilet is hard. So, I carry two other types of catheters around with me to help navigate the inaccessibility of the world. 💖 What do you do when you are out in the world and can’t access an accessible bathroom? Comment below! Let’s learn from each other.

#TBT to when my baclofen pump wasn’t working correctly. This was my life all day, every day, for about 3 months. 💖 This was such a terrible time for me, I cannot even begin to explain how bad. For a couple of months, my baclofen pump didn’t work correctly, just a few weeks after getting the battery replaced the first time. Fast forward all of the testing and we discovered a microtear in the catheter portion of the pump that does the delivering. 💖 I was constantly in withdrawal from baclofen, even though I was taking it orally along with another muscle relaxer - can we say Zombie for the short number of hours I was awake? I was in and out of the hospital and trying to teach (full time) during the times I was not in the hospital. It was hard physically, mentally, and emotionally because I couldn’t live my life. 💖 I was scared I would fall out of my chair. I was scared I wouldn’t be able to stay awake in the classroom (for those that might now know, I used to teach in a residential treatment facility for juvenile criminals). I couldn’t cook for myself, workout, or basically anything around the house. I thought it would never end. 💖 But it did end. If you are going through something and it seems never ending, just hold on. I promise you it will end and it will get better. I am a better person for having gone through this, and if you look for the lesson in your rough waters, you will grow from it. Always growing. Always evolving.

Happy SCI Awareness Month! 💖 The annual incidence of spinal cord injury (SCI) is approximately 54 cases per million population in the U.S. or approximately 17,700 new SCI cases each year. The number of people with SCI living in the United States is currently estimated to be approximately 288,000 persons, with a range from 247,000 to 358,000 persons. 💖 My injury was over 13 years ago. Over the years, I have met some amazing men and women that are doing amazing things around the country, advocating for others and wanting to increase the quality of life for everyone with spinal cord injuries. 💖 If you have a spinal cord injury and are struggling with anything, reach out. You are not alone. I bet there have been many of us that have struggled with the same thing you are. Or, if we haven’t, we know someone who has. You do not have to struggle alone. 💖 Throughout the month, I’m going to be sharing some other statistics and struggles that come with having a spinal cord injury to bring awareness. Anyone can join our community at any time. SCI does not discriminate on age, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. The more we know, the better we can do to bring access to all.

Hello everyone! 💖 I thought I would introduce myself since I’ve had a lot of new followers recently. So, welcome and I really appreciate you being here!! I am truly here to serve you, so if you want to hear about anything, please let me know! My name is Megs and I created The Wheel Life Blog. A blog devoted to living your best life with a physical disability. I talk about all things disabilities, lifestyle, health and wellness, mindset, and productivity/organization. 💖 In 2007 I was in a motorcycle accident that severed my spinal cord, resulting in my T4 Complete paraplegia. I haven’t let that stop me and have worked full time, lived completely independently and enjoyed so many recreation activities. I have an amazing boyfriend that empowers me to try new things, pushes me outside my comfort zone, and supports all my crazy ideas. I am an open book about how I live my life with my disability, so if there is a question, feel free to ask it. 💖 I love to go kayaking, “walking” along a trail taking in the scenery, watching baseball games, listening to live music or sitting around a bonfire. I take pride in my self-care and self-development and would love to talk about that with you. I am a certified Life Coach and can help you design your goals and hold you accountable in your journey to achieve them. 💖 I am also a Young Living business builder and would love to see essential oils/products in everyone’s home and, if it’s a good fit for you, help you earn extra income with this business. I will never try to “sell you” or talk you into anything. I talk about how to “live in wellness” or “live above the wellness line.” If you’re interested in chatting, let me know. 💖 I would love to get to know you! So, say hi and if you want, introduce yourself a little bit in the comments!
