I found out about the active duty soldier, Aaron's self-immolation last night. This afternoon I watched the video of his last moments, his last words screamed in agony, "Free Palestine!" My hearts hurts so badly for him, for his pain and anguish. It was too much and I had to get out of the house, to be in nature--in hopes that it could help me process and live with this heartache. It helped to breathe deeply of the clean air, to rest my eyes on the greens of grass and leaves made vivid by recent rains. Even the gray sky felt calming, the heavy clouds mirroring the heaviness in my heart. The sprinkles falling from the sky freeing my tears. All of it helped some. Before my visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum last year, my emotional attachment to the event was centered around personal memories from the morning of the attacks. I was living in San Diego with my children as we watched it unfold on live television with the rest of the world. However, after my immersive experience touring the museum I am forever altered. It begins with a descent down into a dark hallway where hundreds of voices are speaking... only to realize they are 911 calls from New Yorkers and first responders reporting what was happening that September morning. The tour took two hours and it covered just about everything through eyewitness accounts, debris from the attacks, news footage from that morning, a room dedicated to photos and short film eulogies of every life lost in the towers, on the planes, at the Pentagon. The sheer scale and scope of what was displayed; partially burned firetrucks, ambulances, small personal items of employees in the towers... it seemed unfathomable, yet it was all there. This video is of one of the two memorial pools outside the museum. It has the names of the 2996 people killed that day inscribed on bronze parapets that edge the pools. It was a soothing place and just what I needed to quietly reconcile that my personal memory now included those two hours of reliving what happened at ground zero. #NeverForget #9/11

There are times when this is absolutely true and you need to take close evaluation of your relationship w/ that person. There are other times when we make assumptions based on cues that we don’t have a ton of context for. This piece rarely gets challenged socially. Always stand up for yourself, but never overestimate your ability to be dead ass wrong!
