Meet Paper Baristas. 💌
Each card provides employment for women who have survived human trafficking. The paper behind each card is made by using cotton rag waste from the garment industry. Instead of letting the waste go to landfills, they recycle the cotton rags into handmade paper. A percentage of all sales from Paper Baristas goes right back to to fighting human trafficking.
Not only do they made the most beautiful card for that sweet note of encouragement you’ve been wanting to write, but they look simply lovely on their own in a frame.

If you’ve been in to the shop, we’re sure you’ve gotten to meet our amazing team. They’re absolute quality! I honestly feel so blessed to be surrounded by a few of the most amazing women. Since we love telling stories, we figured we’d tell you a little about each of our team members. Next up, MY MOM. Aka, Shop Mom or Juliann. 🫶 The only way she’d let me do a video about her is if we got a clip together. 😂 I honestly can’t imagine this without her, so I can’t wait to share a little more about her with you. In case you haven’t heard of our Shop Mom, each Thursday she opens the shop where she cleans, cares for all of our plants, packs all our online orders in the most thoughtful ways, and brings a homemade baked good to make all of us feel more at home. She’s really good at making everything she touches better. Why do you like working at made? “I love being apart of a shop that makes a difference in families all over the world. I love the energy and yet the simplicity of the shop. I also love coming alongside my daughter and her vision.” What are you learning // putting into practice in this conversation of ethical and intentional buying? “I have changed a lot of my purchasing. I am now aware of the crazy buying cycle I was raised in. I still have a long way to go but I am learning.” What’s one tip for someone on this journey? “It is a marathon not a sprint. So celebrate small changes.” What do you like to do for fun? “Be with my family. Garden. Bike ride. Go to markets. Explore new places with my man.” What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? “I am pretty transparent and I do not hesitate sharing my life. So not to much about me is not known.” 😂 Who are your people? “My family and friends. 🤍 I keep open to my people expanding as I continue to grow.” What’s the top place you want to visit in the world? “Greece!” 🇬🇷 It takes a village. I’m so thankful my mom is a part
While we want to be aesthetically pleasing to the outside eye, can we be honest with you? The beneath the surface beauty of the stories we get to support, come alongside, and champion is what this is all about. Our encouragement always: Don’t settle for outside beauty. Put another away, don’t settle for trendy if it cost someone else their dignity (employment that doesn’t pay fairly and leaves people in poverty and facing vulnerability does that). Choose slow, intentionally curated living that makes life better for people all around the globe. Consider the whole story. Go deep. Look beneath the surface and let your life and decisions prioritize your brothers and sisters around the globe. #thestorymatters #peoplemattermore
When you experience the beauty of making, you value it differently. Slow down and make with us. September workshops are HERE! 🤍 #thestorymatters

Since we love telling stories, we figured we’d tell you a little about each of our team members. Next up, newest to our family is ALI! We really got to know Ali through our Wednesday book club, which you can read all about her experience in our most recent blog post! But, for now — get to know our gal ALI! 👇 Why do you like working at made? “I love that it’s local expression of a global movement that empowers both makers and consumers. I love telling the stories behind our products while getting to know our customers’ stories too!” What are you learning // putting into practice in this conversation of ethical and intentional buying? “My biggest wins lately surround how I care for the clothes my family already has by mending items and laundering them more gently. We’re making stuff last!” What’s one tip for someone on this journey? “Keep learning, but don’t let your knowledge stay on the page. Set one goal that will make you a more conscious consumer. Once you’ve hit it, set another.” What do you like to do for fun? “Plop me somewhere in nature or with a lot of books, and I’ll be having fun.” What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? “One of my life goals is to see every Shakespeare play performed live (I’m nearly 75% of the way there).” Who are your people? “Stephen J., the best man I know, and our two sweetie babies.” What’s the top place you want to visit in the world? “Anywhere in the British Isles. 🏴🏴🇮🇪🏴” It takes a village. I’m so thankful Ali is a part of ours! 🫶 #thestorymatters #meetourteam

Since we love telling stories, we figured we’d tell you a little about each of our team members. Next up, ASHLEY! Ashley serves as our Market Director here at made, curating all of our market events @the_market_wbg. Why do you like working at made? “Choosing ethically-made alongside a broader community—learning, choosing, and growing together.” 🫶 What are you learning // putting into practice in this conversation of ethical and intentional buying? “Having kids who are always growing and needing new clothes, and working a 9-5 outside the home too, choosing ethically-made is absolutely never convenient, and I admit, sometimes I’m a sucker for convenience. What I’m learning though is the frantic, quick purchases I sometimes make actually stem from a bigger issue in me—hurry. Being thoughtful about my buying starts with being a good, intentional steward of all of my life (time, priorities, rest, limits) and not just this one aspect. It’s all connected. So, I’m trying to incorporate more hand-me-downs among friends/family instead of buying new every few months.” What’s one tip for someone on this journey? “It’s not all or nothing—small changes not only count, but they add up. Start small!” What do you like to do for fun? “Thrift, go on walks, coffee shop hop, arrange flowers, 💐 and honestly, do work that I love.” What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? “When it comes to pests, I’m all fight and no flight; so far, I’ve caught—by hand essentially— three snakes, a mouse, and tons of black widows (they love our yard 😩), and about a million flies, to name a few.” Who’s your people? “My husband Bradley and our two cuties: Wilder and Ruby.” What’s the top place you want to visit in the world? 🌍
COMING THIS JUNE. ✨ We want to help you give more intentionally. Not just for the gift recipient but for the world. Our story begins on the beautiful island of Haiti. I was privileged to serve with Wings of Refuge, an organization that began as a Children’s Home for kids who needed a safe place in the aftermath of the earthquake of 2010. A few years in, we realized many of the kids still had parents or a living relative that simply didn’t have access to fair, safe, and sustainable employment. Something in me started to shift around this time. I had no idea that there were things I was doing, brands I was supporting, ways I had become comfortable consuming back home, that contributed to a system of injustice — one where a woman would work 80 hours a week and still not be able to afford raising her children. In fact, there are orphanages with children and non-profits who are supporting families simply because their work does not pay a wage they can survive upon. While starting to make some personal changes, in Haiti, I got to see firsthand the impact of fair employment led by a few phenomenal social enterprises. I got to hear stories of families thriving together because mom or dad had a job that paid fairly and treated them as precious humans, not liabilities. I got to hear stories of survivors of human trafficking finding restorative employment that was trauma informed and committed to their healing. Personally, I experienced profound transformation in choosing to buy less, so that I can buy what made life better for others. Instead of seeing my story as the most important, intentional buying shifted my heart toward considering the impact my decisions have on my brothers and sisters around the world. This is why we are here — because, friend — there are good stories happening around the world. Don’t buy into the lie that exploiting people is the only option. There is another way. A way that honors our planet, considers the full story, and honors people well. Let’s choose those stories. Now, back to Haiti and the @worhaiti story…read the comments to see wha
