Four new shelter pups to observe this week, with four different responses to greeting a novel person. Watch each puppy closely! Do the behaviors you observe cause you label some or all of them as “fearful?” Why or why not? And, for fun, pick your puppy!
Pick your puppy! Here we see a litter of four shelter pups demonstrating behaviors that could cause us label them as “fearful” or “stressed.” For simplicity, let’s use their collar colors to identify them: red, blue, orange, or purple. Watch each pup to observe their individual response to greeting a novel person. What similarities do you observe? Do you see any differences in their behavior? And, for fun, pick your puppy! Which babe appeals to you and why?
Pick your puppy! Here we meet a trio of pups in shelter, Duke (black and white), Lorde (brindle with the white chest), and Earl (black and brindle). What differences do you see in their behavior? What similarities? Which puppy do you gravitate towards and why?
Pick your puppy! Here we meet two new pups in a shelter, Darci (in the foreground), and Davey (in the background). What differences do you see in their behavior? What similarities? Which puppy do you gravitate towards and why?
Robert and Avery
Pick your puppy!
Meet Robert (in the background) and Avery (in the foreground), two four-month old sibling pups in a shelter. What differences do you see in their behavior? What would you do to help Robert feel better in the shelter?
Now for the fun part: Which puppy would you adopt? Why? Go ahead - pick your puppy! There's no wrong answer!
I wish this good thing didn’t have to come to an end. Five full days to train together, talk behavior, and teach one another - it’s the KPA National experience! A big thank you to our host All Dog Adventures, LLC and my outstanding Karen Pryor Academy students who traveled from Pennsylvania, Florida, and northern Virginia to train dogs with me.
