Hard to remember a more exciting game in The Oval than this one!

Having beaten Queens Park Association Football Club a couple of times in pre-season, we warned the boys against letting complacency creep in; it was a warning not well heeded as we started with an all-too casual swagger; we quickly paid the price. The QP No. 9 is a handful, a point highlighted before KO. As a hopeful ball sailed high and we failed to deal with it around halfway it turned into a foot race that he won. Moments later we leave the same player unmarked in the box and find ourselves 0-2 down.

The message from the bench, was not to panic and play ‘our game’ but with the lion’s share of possession, chances come and go and it starts to have a feeling of one of those days. The anxiety exuding from the throng of supporters behind now palpable.

No teacups were broken at half time, just an acknowledgement that we got caught cold, we are on top everywhere but on the scoresheet. We talk about effectively combining in the final 1/3 and how it now comes down to their individual and collective character. The boys believe.

The second half brings a higher tempo & more urgency as we get the desired response. QP get deeper & struggle to get anything meaningful. Our confidence returns and combinations are visible from the back to front, but the ball still will not go in. Then with a little over 20 to go Ryder whips in another delightful cross and it’s turned in by Arlo. Game on! - We throw the dice with a tactical change as QP’s attacking spark is now all but extinguished and they start to look rattled. 1 – 2 becomes, 2 – 2 but we are not done we continue to move the ball with authority and control. When the 3rd goes in it is greeted by a roar from the stands and Jamie and I allow ourselves a little smile and a handshake, accompanied by a nervous look at the watch. No need, as the game is sealed when Xavier turns in the box and finishes.

This was a team performance full of character and worthy of note.

As we hit the halfway point of the season, we reflect on an 18 + month journey for this young squad with a lot of pride & a pretty good-looking 2nd on the league table.

Transition is the key.

Against a team that are unbeaten and yet to concede a goal so far this season, we give as good as we got. Both teams have moments in a first half that ebbed and flowed, we have really good moments and opportunities and both teams will be ruing referee calls. A Stonewall penalty in the first half would have given us the chance to end the DCR clean sheet record, but it wasn't to be and we moved on.
They would have had a similar claim as well.

1-0 to them at half-time. I'm delighted as we have grafted tirelessly into a fierce wind, in and out of possession we have done well.

Second half we are wasteful in possession and lose the aggression we showed first half and they score twice in the second half. We have good moments as well, but the key ones belong to them and they deserved the win.

A sour note at the end where a serious injury to a DCR player sees the ref call time as a ambulance is required. Best wishes from everyone at QAFC Youth as we hope it's nothing serious.
