AGENCY There is voluntary head turning away from triggers back to mom. 3. TRIGGERS AT A SAFE DISTANCE Wheel chairs, people walking in & out, dogs multiple dogs walking toward us & away from us, but we stay at a distance where Bali feels safe. 4.LOOSE LEASH It only gets tight for a second & it’s because Bali pulled a little (which is totally legal). 5. GOOD TIMING Bali’s mom starts the game the second she gets that eye contact, which reinforces Bali’s behavior. What DON’T you see? 🫣 1.CORRECTIONS. There is not a verbal or physical correction to be seen or heard. Punishment is not a part of the plan. 2. MAKING IT TOO HARD TOO FAST We stay at a distance where Bali can be successful. 3.REQUIRING CONSTANT EYE CONTACT. Bali has the freedom to look at her triggers 4. BEING STINGY WITH TREATS Bali loves treats & they make great reinforcers so we are generous with them rewards. along with the praise. 5. FRUSTRATION Bali & her parents stay relaxed & under threshold. If something isn’t perfect, no one melts down. LEASH GREETING PSA! Stop asking people if their dog is friendly! Instead ask if your dog can greet their dog. I know it doesn’t sound like much of a difference, but it makes a big difference to the dog parent whose dog may not like other dogs or just not like leash greetings. They already feel uncomfortable, sad, or nervous, & feel judged and isolated. When you have a reactive dog and someone approaches with their dog, it’s nerve wracking. You’re trying your best to keep your dog calm & an approaching dog parent who doesn’t understand that & is also coming close enough to ask the question just escalates the anxiety & then having to yell, “she’s not friendly,” just makes it feel worse. If you have a reactive dog or you’re not sure if a leash greeting is a good idea, always decline a greeting. You can say why, make up an excuse, or just say, “no.” Advocate for your dog even if it’s awkward. In the video I say that Bear can’t say, “hi,” while I reward Bear for the presence of the other dog, keep her below threshold & increase distance by steering her away because the small barking dog is at the end of their leash & I don’t trust the handler to stay clear. There are a lot of other reasons a leash greeting isn’t a good idea like maybe the dog is training, they don’t have time, or they’re feeling sick. Leash greetings can be a nightmare of over excitement & tangled leashes too. Leave It is an important cue for pups to learn. We teach it by reinforcing when they turn away from whatever they’re interested in & not by pulling on the leash. Here is a video to show how to work on it when Dulce is farther away. #midweekmotivation time! Here is a progression of the Finish cue with Bear. It isn’t perfect yet, but it will be soon. Is she super smart? Yes. But more importantly, Bear is having fun! She is enjoying learning, which is not only going to make training fun, she is also going to learn more quickly.
