So happy to have my work on the walls in - a beautiful local pub that does the most incredible food. If you’re in the Brecon Beacons this summer, pop in for a drink or treat yourself to something to eat - lots of my local paintings available on display ☺️

One from my last day at - it was a warm and hazy day and so beautiful, I leaned against a rock listening to the skylarks while deciding which parts of the view to paint

Towards the end of my residency I began not painting right to the edges of the canvas. I really love the sense of space, freedom and energy this creates 🌞

Some more from my studio series from ☺️

In the hills above Arthog were nesting pairs of Canada geese. I saw a mother goose sat on her eggs on a tiny island in the middle of a little pond, and her mate was keeping watch nearby. This piece is part of my work and will be available soon 🌞

Here are some crops of a few pieces in my studio series from - I painted from feeling and memory of the place during my second week. I really enjoyed the energy and freedom in this way of working.

Thank you for your patience! 📸

This is one of my favourite paintings from my residency. It was made on the last day as I sat on the hills above Arthog and listened to the skylarks.

I can still feel the heat of the sun on my neck as I painted this outside the house. I was enjoying making big and simple sweeping marks after having spent a few days in the studio 🌞

During the second week of my time at I spent some time in the studio developing my studio practice: painting from feeling and memory. I started this indoor way of working last year when there were so many days I couldn’t paint outside because of the rain. I was trying to express the space and magnitude I crave in a landscape without getting too representational, and this way of working suddenly took on a new life and energy - and the paintings surprised me in their wildness. I felt that, until then, my studio works had been somewhat held back. I really enjoyed the freedom of making these pieces.

Take me back to these hills above Arthog! The Beacons look so tame after the mountains of North Wales! Thank goodness we’re off to the Highlands shortly 😂 (poor Bannau Brycheiniog, I love it really)

I’m now in the process of cataloguing all the paintings I made at and getting them ready to release on my website. This’ll probably be around early June, because I’m about to head off on a trip to Scotland. Sign up to my newsletter via my website to have first access to the works! I will also be sending out my monthly newsletter this week talking about my time at the residency ☺️

I have so much work to share with you. Tomorrow is the last full day of my residency and I’m feeling a bit panicked and restless! Like I want to walk everywhere at once and paint everything at once! Leaving will be bittersweet. This has been an incredibly nourishing and exciting experience for me, and so needed. I’ve seen developments in both my work and myself. I’m very grateful indeed to be here, thank you and 🌞🌞🌞

Just over halfway through my time at and here are close ups of some favourites so far. I feel like I’m really getting into the swing of it and seeing some exciting developments in my work. My eyes and heart are getting to know this beautiful landscape. This is a magical time! 🌞

Photos from Jess Hinsley Landscape Artist's post 02/05/2024

I have been taking a short break from posting while I settle into the residency, but here I am to show you some snippets of what I’ve been working on. There are so many things to learn about this landscape - I’m not used to painting water, sand or rocks. My eyes have been adjusting to the new colours and textures. It’s absolute bliss.

I am here at the in North Wales for the next two weeks to develop my practice. The mountains up here are more rugged than those I usually paint in Bannau Brycheiniog, which means the colours and brush marks will be different, and I hope to broaden my skill set and build confidence in my mark making. This morning I warmed up with some sketchbook drawings, assisted by Toby the residency cat! Followed by an afternoon trying to capture the purples I’m seeing in the landscape.

‘Rain Passing over the Black Mountains’ 10”x8”. I watched as a rain shower passed over the mountains. The purples and greens were so beautiful. The rain came my way shortly after! This one is available, message me for details.

So much grey, and rain, and we’re all fed up. But I tried to capture the warmth of the land in this little one. The orange of the dried bracken at this time of year brightens up the landscape. This is ‘Cefn Llechid with Fan Gyhirych Behind’, 7”x5” and it’s available ☺️
