The Toston Irrigation District (TID) was awarded an ARPA grant through the Montana DNRC to address degradation of the pumping plant on the Missouri River. The aging pump station intake was inefficient and had become difficult and expensive to maintain. The TID had to compensate for the age of the structure by pumping more water into their system, which resulted in an excess of wastewater being returned to Crow Creek and the Missouri River, risking the quality of these water bodies. WWC assisted TID in securing grant funding and designed a new concrete intake structure to replace the existing earthen berm, headgates and CMP supply culverts.

Connecting Horse Creek 11/07/2024

Horse Creek, one of Wyoming's longest continuous running creeks, is home to a diverse range of native plains fish species, many of which are considered species of concern. However, irrigation for downstream producers can make it challenging for fish to move freely. To address this, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Goshen County Irrigation District collaborated on an innovative lateral fish diversion, designed by WWC’s Laramie office. This new structure, alongside an upgraded one nearby, opens up an additional 23 miles of connected habitat. It allows fish to navigate up and downstream without disrupting irrigation, ensuring they can access necessary habitats for spawning and juvenile rearing. This project not only supports species of greatest conservation need but also sustains riparian corridors, showcasing the power of collaboration in conserving 's fish resources. Check out the video below with special guest appearances by Justin Terfehr and Branden Lahman!

WWC is surveying for Axe Build at Black Tooth Park in Sheridan. We staked disturbance limits to prepare for topsoil stripping (occurring today). The project includes 2,381 feet of concrete pathways, 1,000 feet of curb, parking areas, utility access, and picnic spots. At the center will be Sheridan’s first inclusive playground, welcoming users of all abilities. This project is funded by GPET, Public Benefit, and a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant. Pictured are our surveyors, Dusty Coryn and Ryan Groce, working with a very high-tech vehicle borrowed from the owner of a nearby golf course that will not disturb the turf.

WWC recently worked with over a dozen irrigation districts in Montana to apply for DNRC Renewable Resource Grants to help improve, rehabilitate and modernize aging infrastructure within their canal systems. The Montana DNRC has a gallery on their website: https://grants.dnrc.mt.gov/gallery/81f77b50-a3bd-4af2-8dd8-f210d24d60d3 where you can search for and vote on projects within your community. The more public support the project gets, the better chance it has at being awarded federal funding. Please consider voting on a project or two and spread the love, your vote could make all the difference!

WWC is in the Arctic! WWC recently completed the fieldwork for the Olmstead Mine Cleanup Project, located near Wiseman, Alaska, 60 miles into the Arctic Circle. Site access involved a 7-hour drive from Fairbanks on the Dalton Highway, followed by 13 miles via snowmobile up the remote Gold Creek drainage in the Brooks Range.
The scope of work included WWC’s subcontractor, Wrangell Outfitters, dismantling two buildings, removing all waste, cutting a bulldozer and trommel into pieces that could be freighted by snowmobile, and excavating limited quantities of contaminated soil by hand. Wrangell hauled over 20 snowmobile loads out to the highway. WWC oversaw environmental cleanup and collected confirmation samples following cleanup. The WWC team has completed all but the final report in less than 6 months, with the bulk of the work occurring in February and March in temperatures ranging from -40 to 30 F.
The Olmstead Project demonstrates WWC’s success in growing our business in the environmental and federal sectors, and serving states beyond Wyoming and Montana.

The historic Crowley Block in Lewistown, MT, built in 1913, has been undergoing significant transformations. Under the EPA's Brownfields program, this project has focused on addressing environmental concerns, such as asbestos and lead paint. The remediation process required collaboration with numerous parties including Snowy Mountain Development, the EPA and others.

The building will soon house the One Health Clinic, offering a range of medical services on a sliding fee scale, with plans to include dental and pharmacy services. The upper floors are being converted into affordable housing for low-income families, expected to open in June.

WWC has been recognized with SMDC’s 2023 Partnership of the Year Award for their efforts in revitalizing downtown Lewistown. For more updates on this project, stay tuned!

New Fishing Pond Could Make Cheyenne A Bass, Bluegill Hotspot 08/03/2024

The Cheyenne Business Parkway Natural Area has a new 2-acre pond, designed and permitted by WWC Engineering. This family-friendly initiative aims to provide outdoor bonding opportunities, allowing kids and adults to enjoy bass and bluegill fishing. Managed by the Laramie County Conservation District, it's strategically located near growing residential areas, potentially tying into the City's greenway expansion in the future. The 16-foot-deep pond will be stocked by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department with bluegills this fall, and largemouth bass in the spring of 2025.

WWC collected high-quality drone LiDAR and survey data of the Green River for a project with the City of Green River. WWC used these data to develop a 2D hydraulic model of the Green River and Killdeer Wetland Complex in CivilGEO GeoHECRAS. This modeling has provided insights into the complex hydraulics of the Green River and the wetland operations.

The $2 Million Coal Mine That Might Hold a $37 Billion Treasure 21/11/2023

WWC Engineering is excited to see one of our top clients in the news. Ramaco Resources aims to extract rare-earth elements, including neodymium and dysprosium, from the coal beds of its Brook Mine in northeastern Wyoming. WWC has been partnering with Ramaco Resources for over 10 years. To check out the full WSJ article, featuring WWC Geologic Technician, Sydney Magann, click here:

WWC Engineering is performing a Level I Master Plan of the Casper Alcova Irrigation District. Working with the district and the Wyoming Water Development Commission, WWC is completing a field investigation, system assessment, and GIS inventory of each structure within the irrigation district. This includes all headgates, weirs, drop structures, check structures, tunnels, siphons, and turnouts. Our field staff and that of our subcontractor, Trihydro Corporation, have worked tirelessly to locate, investigate, and document over 1,400 individual structures. These data will aid in future rehabilitation efforts.

WWC will soon be starting a project with WyoDak Energy Services, LLC and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on replacement of infrastructure on the Fort Peck Dam in Montana. Fort Peck was a major project of the Public Works Administration, part of the New Deal. Construction of Fort Peck Dam started in 1933, and at its peak employed nearly 11,000 workers. The earthen dam was the first dam built in the upper Missouri River Basin. Its concrete spillway famously graced the very first cover of Life Magazine on November 23, 1936 (which cost 10 cents at the time). The dam was completed in 1940 and began generating electricity in July 1943. WWC will provide surveying and construction administration services and prepare as-built drawings of the improvements.
