Lindgren class have been learning about hot countries this week and the animals which live there. In Art, they have been looking at 'warm' colours and used them to paint the background of their animal pictures. They traced an African animal and cut it out to create the silhouette.. The outcomes are fabulous!
We instill a love of reading from the earliest possible moment at Whipton Barton! The children in Preschool begin learning to read by learning the letter sounds (phonemes) using Read Write Inc picture cards. This week they have been finding objects which start with the initial sound.

The Preschool children have been focusing on their DT learning and are developing their ideas and skills to make a junk-modelled house. They have used a range of resources and are learning to use the art area in the classroom with confidence.
In DT this term, Year 2 are designing and making their own puppets. After spending last week designing, this week it was time to start sewing! We practiced a running stitch on boards first, then when we were feeling confident, we moved onto sewing together our puppets. All the children showed excellent persistence and team work!
Do you have a budding baker at home? If you love their sweet and savoury creations, maybe they could appear on Bake Off? 😁🍞🥧🎂
📚World Book Day is fast approaching📚
On Thursday 7th March the Federation will be celebrating World Book Day. With two exciting competitions and activities throughout the day we cannot wait!
Anning had an amazing school trip this morning as part of their Geography topic, 'To Exeter and Beyond,' looking at the different sights of Exeter. The children excitedly caught the train and members of the public said how well behaved all of the children were. Once in Exeter, the children enjoyed spotting the signs of spring in Northernhay Gardens as well as the Roman wall and the remains of the castle. The children were impressed by the size of Exeter Cathedral. They loved looking at the stone faces carved within the cathedral structure and found them fascinating. We were extremely fortunate to go inside the Guildhall where we learnt that in the past it has been used as a prison, police station, court, and function room. Finally, the children got to spend some time in the children's area at the library.
From 8.30-8.50am every morning, our children are involved in Early Morning Work. This is a very important session where children are working on key learning. Reception children often use this time to practice their early writing skills. Spending an extra 20 minutes on this every day is really having a positive impact on their progress!
As part of our Geography unit 'To Exeter and Beyond', Shackleton class braved the wind for their trip into Exeter city centre yesterday. They caught the train; explored many famous landmarks in Exeter; visited the library; and walked A LOT of steps!
Here are the P.E Days for this term.
The Torbay & Devon Civic Award is designed to provide children with opportunities to develop their character and values which in turn, supports the children to become well-rounded, confident and caring individuals who strive to make a difference in their community.
There are six main areas:
1. Active citizenship in their school community (E.g. Reading Buddies and Peer Mentoring)
2. Active citizenship in their home community (E.g. bulb planting, litter picking or helping at a club)
3. A physical hobby and a non-physical hobby
4. Residential experience
5. Supporting a charity
6. Pledge to the planet
The Civic Award is personal to each child and the children who undertake the Civic Award can work on their chosen activities whilst at home and at the weekly lunchtime club with the adults in school. Children develop life skills such as organisation, independence and resilience whilst planning and running different parts of their Civic Award.
This week the children have been involved in making Charity posters!
To kick start our new Geography unit 'To Exeter and Beyond' the children in Year 1
had a selection of photographs to look at and decide if they showed Exeter or not. If it wasn't Exeter, they had to say where it was. The children were good at spotting photographs of Exeter and were able to say where in Exeter it was. Lots of children were able to recognise London but found Plymouth and Bristol trickier to recognise and name!
These Year 1 children received Headteacher's Awards for their fantastic maths. They worked really hard to solve worded problems using their subtraction skills and have really focussed on their presentation as well! We are so impressed!
Our youngest Star Learner this week was chosen because she demonstrated our Federation Choices - Caring, Honest, Organised, Inclusive, Curious, Engaged, Safe and Smart!
There are still places available at Cooking Club this half term on Mondays 3.20-4.20pm. Parents need to attend alongside their child/children. If you would like to join this popular club please ring or call into the school office to book your place!
Year 1 braved the weather on Friday (including hail, rain, wind and sunshine) to go on an Invertebrate Safari. After learning that invertebrates don't have a backbone, the children set off and found slugs, woodlice, worms, spiders and snails. Using their magnifying glasses, they carefully lifted up wooden tree stumps to see what lurked underneath, before carefully placing them back in their original position. The children decided that the invertebrates like to like in damp, dark places where they have access to foods they like to eat. Can you find any invertebrates this week?
What an amazing first week back! It is wonderful coming together to celebrate the successes and achievements across the Federation.
A huge well done to our ⭐Stars of the Week⭐
Amazing talent and fantastic collaboration across our Trust schools! Our very own Conor and his dance partner, Elsie, from Exwick Heights Primary School dancing their way to the top!
It was so lovely to speak to so many parents at our Parents' Evening before half term. We asked for your feedback and were really happy to hear such positive thoughts! Thank you for all your wonderful ideas for making our next event even better! We have listened and will be using as many as we can! Thank you to everyone who took the time to share your experience.
Parks class had a great introduction to their new science topic of ‘Forces’ this afternoon. It was a fiddly job, but they were very resilient and made their own paper rocket using a straw. They were then able to make their rockets launch by using air force. They then took their rockets outside to test them on the playground as well. It was great fun!
Jake earnt a Headteacher's Award for his behaviour and kindness this week. He demonstrated our choice of CARING by helping others in need and volunteering to clean up the playground of all the litter, which he did along with some friends this lunchtime.
This week in Nature and Minibeasts Club, the children have been hunting for worms to add to our worm farms. We popped them into the jars and added some food and put them in a cool dark place. The children are looking forward to checking them after half term to see what progress the worms have made burrowing through the soil and sand!
In Science, Year 1 have been thinking about how we can protect the environment and in particular, have been researching plastic pollution in the ocean. Shackleton class have written a letter to explain why littering can be dangerous to sea animals and also what we can do to with our rubbish to prevent in ending up in our seas and oceans.

Last week our children took part in 'Safer Internet Day'. Lindgren and Nightingale Classes discussed how to stay safe online by not talking to strangers and only going online when with an adult. They then had a go at writing sentences about what they had learnt!
