Covid 19

PAPER AND BOARD ARE LOW RISK CORONAVIRUS TRANSMITTERS
With attention focused on ways to stop the spread of Coronavirus, questions have inevitably been raised about its transmissibility on paper and board. According to scientist and health experts, printed materials including newspapers, mail, marketing materials and packaging, are low risk transmitters of Covid – 19.
And here’s why

PAPER AND BOARD ARE POROUS – The virus prefers smooth, non-porous surfaces such as plastic. Paper and cardboard are porous and as a result carry the lowest potency for the shortest period of time. These were the findings researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centres for Diseases control (CDC), UCLA, and Princeton University in America. It studied how stable the coronavirus was on different surfaces and found that of plastic, stainless steel and cardboard, the virus lasted the longest on plastic (up to 72 hours) and the shortest on cardboard (up to 24 hours)

POOR SURVIVABILITY – These times are shortened when the surface is exposed to air, with the virus’s potency decreasing the more it is exposed. The World Health Organisation says:” The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low” The Centres for Diseases & Control (CDC), also in America, stated:” In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from food products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient, refrigerated, or frozen temperatures.”

THE PRINT PRODUCTION PROCESS – The manufacturing conditions of paper combined with the printing and distribution processes significantly decrease the amount of viable particle required to infect someone, the printing process decreases the potency of any virus, according to by virologist George Lomonossoff. In a BBC Radio Scotland interview, when asked about newspapers in particular, he said:” Newspapers are pretty sterile because of the way they are printed and the process they’ve been through (to be produced).” In fact, in response to the pandemic, paper and board manufactures have become even more creative with their portfolio and risen to some of the unique challenges it has presented.

While we continue to respond to the virus and understand what can be done to control its impact, it is clear the risk from our everyday use of paper and board is reassuringly low.

The State of the Industry: The Rise of Self Publishing - article First of all, you should know that the book business is in a state of turmoil and change. I’ve weathered a few storms in the past. When television started, I was told no one would read books again. That should give you some idea of how old I am. When book chains started to show up in shopping mall...

From manuscript to the store shelves

Finding My Voice is the title of my book, which I spent many years writing. I benefited from active input from probably more than ten people by the time the book was ready, some of them, experts in their fields. These included a project consultant, developmental editor, copy editor and typesetter. I also had help from friends and family, which ranged from having them read sections of the book and offer advice, all the way to assisting in jogging my memory around specific events. With the manuscript in hand years later came a new journey - the journey of getting the book onto the shelves.

As a self-published author, this process isn’t easy by any stretch. The positive side is that people are willing to advise on aspects such as getting an ISBN, sourcing a printing company (in my case, my wife spent a day or so doing searches online). I can not overstate how helpful the internet is as far as solid advice for first-time authors. With all things considered, though, the toughest part of my journey was getting a distributor.

Getting my book into stores in my home country Zambia was relatively easy as was getting it onto Amazon through Kindle Direct Publishing. On the other hand, the process in South Africa, my country of residence, was punctuated by many lows when some gatekeepers wrote to me saying they wouldn’t take the book on.

Keep in mind that the leading bookstores in South Africa, such as Exclusive Books and CNA only deal with a handful of distributors that represent self-published authors.

The first response I received, after many emails to and fro with one such company, read:

• “We are a relatively small distribution agency and must, therefore, be very selective about the books we take on for distribution. While your book certainly is of interest, it, unfortunately, does not fit our publishing list at the moment.”
Before this response, the emails from the decision-maker to me had seemed promising. I’d even sent some copies of the book to them via DHL for evaluation, so this was a damper.

I approached a Joburg based independent bookstore who said they could stock the book. Their condition, however, was that I would have to host a launch event at their store. In theory, it sounds reasonable. After doing the numbers, I figured that this would not financially make sense for me. For some reason, the store has opted to make the launch condition compulsory because they make money from drinks and catering at the event. That’s beside the potential cash they’d make from book sales. In fairness, the share from sales that this store grants the author is decent. So, I asked if the condition is ‘cast in stone’. The response from the manager read:

• Unfortunately yes. I cannot make any decisions about books being in the store unless there is an event.
Bummer!

I had a couple of NO’s telephonically as well, but the one below that came as an email from a Cape Town store hit me hard:
• Thank you so much for your email, and the information on your book. It looks like a great story, but it is unfortunately not something that we could sell to our customer base, so we won’t be taking it at this time.

What? Not something they could sell to their customers? The cheek!

Was I discouraged? Yes!
Did I give in? No!

Thankfully, I could see traction with book sales on Amazon and from the stores in Zambia who twice had sold-out and were re-stocked. The sales, coupled with fantastic reviews, kept me driven.

I continued researching pursuing leads from the prospects I was uncovering online.

Eventually, I did find a distributor that believed in the book. The email I received began with the following two sentences, which were like music to my ears:

• Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on a beautiful publication. I’ve extensively gone through your book on Amazon and would love to help you to distribute your book into bookstores.

As an independent author, getting into bookstores isn’t easy but, it’s not impossible. Consider online stores where your margins are probably better, and your base can seamlessly get their hands on your book. Find a way!

You’ve come a long way already so push a little further - or a lot further. Either way, see it through.
