Purchasing property is a trusted and reliable form of investment. Given high interest rates, many people might delay investing in property to avoid costly bond repayments. There are, however, benefits to investing in property now.

When interest rates are high, some homeowners may feel compelled to sell their properties. This creates opportunities for prospective buyers to purchase properties at fair prices – or relatively low prices, if a seller is pressed to sell urgently. Indeed, recent market reports demonstrate that property prices have declined as a result of high interest rates.

Waiting for the South African Reserve Bank to reduce interest rates might lead to fewer market options, increased competition for homes, and higher property prices. This may result in buyers purchasing properties which they cannot realistically afford (if, and when, interest rates are hiked again). With economists predicting interest rates to drop in the second half of the year, it is currently a buyer’s market.
