How We Got Into Tallow Skincare:
At Fatworks, we’ve always been all about high-quality animal fats for cooking. But we never expected to stumble upon something so game-changing for our skin.
It all started when one of our customers told us they were using our tallow as a moisturizer 😅. Naturally, we were curious—could the same tallow we use for frying actually work for skincare? So, all four of us (the whole Fatworks crew back then) decided to give it a shot.
The results? We were blown away. Our skin felt softer, healthier, and way more hydrated. We couldn't believe it—tallow wasn't just amazing in the kitchen, it was a total skincare game-changer.
Why Tallow Works So Well
Turns out, tallow is loaded with vitamins like A, D, E, K, B12, and choline—all things your skin loves. Here's what we noticed:
No clogged pores: It didn’t make us break out.
Better skin elasticity: Our skin felt firmer and more elastic.
Improved skin tone: Some of us even noticed a reduction in UV damage and more even skin tone.
Faster cell regeneration: Our skin just looked more refreshed overall.
From Cooking to Skincare
We were so inspired by how well it worked that we decided to start making tallow-based skincare products. Now we offer a full line of whipped tallow skincare, even adding organic essential oils for variety. It’s a natural, chemical-free alternative to the lotions we’d been using for years.
What started as a cooking obsession turned into a full-on skincare revolution, and we couldn’t be happier about it.

Did you know tallow can help with weight loss? Packed with healthy fats, tallow keeps you fuller for longer, reduces cravings, and fuels your body with sustained energy. Its high CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) content has been linked to fat loss and improved metabolism. Plus, cooking with tallow means you're avoiding harmful seed oils, making it easier to shed those extra kg's naturally. Try tallow in your diet for a delicious and effective way to support your weight loss journey!
James Rorty, a trailblazing journalist and author, sounded the alarm decades ago about the dangers of ultra-processed foods and seed oils, warning the public that these products were wreaking havoc on our health. He foresaw the devastating impact that these industrially manufactured foods would have on society, linking them to an increase in chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and even cognitive decline like dementia. At the time, Rorty’s concerns were largely dismissed, with food corporations continuing to push processed foods and seed oils as “healthier” alternatives.
Today, Rorty’s warnings have proven true. Scientific evidence has now linked ultra-processed foods and seed oils to a host of modern health crises, including the very issues Rorty highlighted. The rise of dementia, soaring rates of diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases can be traced back to the widespread consumption of these foods. As more people turn away from natural, whole foods and revert to traditional fats like tallow and butter, it becomes clear that Rorty’s message was not just ahead of its time, but a critical warning we should have heeded much sooner.
Nature Knows Best
Ever wonder why ants, nature's perfect scavengers, instinctively avoid margarine and reduced-fat spreads but flock straight to butter? 🐜🍀
In this simple yet powerful experiment, you can see that the ants didn't touch the margarine or reduced-fat margarine. Instead, they gathered around the butter, drawn to the real, wholesome fat our bodies are naturally meant to consume.
Nature is telling us something important here: Fats from real, natural sources like butter are vital for our well-being. Butter is rich in healthy fats that support brain function, nourish our skin, and provide a source of energy. Meanwhile, margarine and processed spreads are often filled with unnatural, harmful ingredients that even the ants avoid!
When you choose real fats, like grass-fed butter or tallow, you're giving your body what it needs to thrive. It's time we listen to nature and bring these healthy fats back into our diets.
Switching to animal fat-based products for your skin can offer several potential benefits, thanks to their unique composition and properties. Here's an overview of why some individuals choose animal fat products for skincare and the advantages they may provide:
1. Rich in Essential Fatty Acids
Animal fats, such as tallow (rendered beef fat) and lard (rendered pork fat), are high in saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. These fats closely resemble the sebum produced by human skin, which can help:
Moisturize and Nourish: They provide deep hydration, helping to maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier.
Improve Skin Elasticity: Essential fatty acids can enhance skin flexibility and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
2. Contains Beneficial Vitamins
Animal fats are natural sources of vitamins that are essential for healthy skin, including:
Vitamin A: Promotes skin renewal and repair.
Vitamin D: Supports skin cell growth and repair, although topical application benefits are still under research.
Vitamin E: Acts as an antioxidant, protecting the skin from free radical damage.
3. High in Stearic Acid
Stearic acid, a common component in animal fats, has exfoliating properties that can help:
Remove Dead Skin Cells: Promotes a smoother and brighter complexion.
Cleanse Pores: Helps in cleansing the skin without stripping it of natural oils.
4. Natural and Minimal Processing
Many animal fat-based skincare products are minimally processed and free from synthetic additives, making them appealing for those seeking:
Natural Ingredients: Reduced exposure to potentially irritating chemicals found in some commercial skincare products.
Sustainability: When sourced responsibly, animal fats can be a sustainable ingredient option.
5. Suitable for Various Skin Types
Animal fat products can be versatile and beneficial for different skin types:
Dry Skin: Provides intense hydration and nourishment.
Sensitive Skin: Gentle on the skin with fewer synthetic irritants.
Aging Skin: Supports skin elasticity and reduces signs of aging.
When seed oils began to replace traditional fats in the early 1900s, a misleading narrative formed around cholesterol and LDL, causing the demonization of fats like tallow.
The truth is, LDL cholesterol can be affected differently depending on the type of fat consumed. Seed oils, which are high in omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, can lower LDL levels temporarily, but at a hidden cost. The high concentration of omega-6s found in seed oils can lead to inflammation, which is now understood to play a significant role in chronic diseases like heart disease. While seed oils might lower LDL cholesterol on paper, they also increase oxidized LDL, a much more harmful type of cholesterol that damages arteries and increases the risk of cardiovascular problems.
On the other hand, tallow, which is rich in saturated fats, was wrongly demonized because it can raise LDL cholesterol slightly. But here's the critical detail that was overlooked: tallow raises large, buoyant LDL particles—the type that is far less likely to contribute to heart disease. For centuries, humans thrived on saturated fats from animal sources like tallow without the chronic diseases that are now so prevalent in the age of seed oils.
This oversimplified focus on cholesterol levels, particularly LDL, misled generations into abandoning healthy, traditional fats.
Did you know that saturated fats are essential for optimal metabolic function? Contrary to what we've been told for decades, saturated fats play a crucial role in energy production, hormone regulation, and overall metabolic health. When we consume real, natural fats like beef tallow, our bodies use them efficiently for fuel, helping to maintain stable energy levels, support brain function, and balance cholesterol.
At Fatworks, we believe in bringing back the truth about healthy fats. Seed oils and overly processed fats have contributed to the rise of metabolic disorders, but animal fats, like tallow, have been sustaining human health for centuries. Let's break the myth—eating the right fats can actually improve your metabolism and promote long-term wellness!

Choose from our fan-favorite varieties:
🧼 Pine & Oat Tallow Bar – Refreshing and soothing.

These soaps are made with our signature grass-fed beef tallow, nourishing your skin while staying 100% natural.
At Fatworks, we believe that freshness is key, especially when it comes to food products like our Beef Tallow Butter and Tallownaise. Here's why we choose to make these fresh every morning before shipping:
1. Better Flavor & Quality: Freshly made products retain their natural flavors, textures, and aromas much better than those made in advance. By preparing our Tallownaise and Tallow Butter just before departure, we preserve their richness and taste, ensuring they arrive at their peak quality.
2. Nutrient Integrity: Freshly made products maintain higher levels of nutrients. Ingredients like tallow, butter, and eggs in our Tallownaise are most potent when fresh. When foods sit for too long, they can lose essential vitamins, fats, and minerals, so by making them fresh, we ensure you're getting all the benefits.
3. Longer Shelf Life for You: When you receive products freshly made, they naturally last longer at home. This means you get the most out of the shelf life, keeping the food fresher for your meals.
4. No Need for Preservatives: Making our products fresh daily allows us to avoid artificial preservatives, which are often used in mass-produced food to extend shelf life. We prioritize natural preservation methods like using high-quality tallow and Celtic salt, both of which have been traditional ways to keep food fresh for centuries.
5. Maximum Freshness for the Best Experience: We want you to enjoy our products the way they are meant to be—fresh, flavorful, and nutritious. Our commitment to making everything right before it leaves ensures that by the time it arrives at your door, it’s as fresh as the moment we made it.
This dedication to freshness extends to our tallow as well, whether it's for cooking or skincare, so you can always expect the best when you choose us.
Did you know: A plant doesn't want you to eat its seeds (for obvious reason), so it naturally fills them with toxins as a defense mechanism. Yet, we've been consuming seed oils—extracted from these very seeds—for decades. Research has increasingly shown that seed oils, high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, have played a significant role in the rise of chronic diseases over the past 50 years. These oils have been linked to conditions such as heart disease, obesity, and metabolic disorders, as they disrupt the body's natural balance. So, why are we still cooking with them?
It’s almost an oxymoron that something as richly saturated as tallow doesn’t clog your pores—instead, it’s effortlessly absorbed by your skin. Despite its density, tallow mirrors the natural oils in your skin, allowing it to pe*****te deeply without leaving a greasy residue. As a deodorant, tallow not only nourishes but also balances your skin, delivering moisture and protection without the pore-clogging chemicals found in conventional products. It’s proof that nature’s most saturated fats can be some of the best-kept secrets for healthy, breathable skin.
In kitchens across South Africa, a shift is taking place, one that’s been years in the making. For decades, the word “cholesterol” was whispered with fear, and families were encouraged to abandon traditional fats in favour of seed oils and margarine. But now, more and more South Africans are awakening to the truth behind the cholesterol myth—and with that awakening comes a return to something real, something pure: Beef Tallow.
It started with a growing skepticism. People began questioning the health advice that had been handed down for generations, advice that seemed to contradict the wisdom of their ancestors. They remembered how their grandparents had cooked with tallow, lard, and butter—rich, flavorful fats that had been replaced by processed oils in the name of health. But as the years passed, the promised health benefits didn’t materialize. Instead, chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension were on the rise, and many began to wonder if they had been misled.
As tallow finds its way into more and more South African homes, it’s not just a return to a traditional way of cooking—it’s a reclaiming of health, a quiet revolution that’s empowering families to take control of their well-being and savour every meal along the way.
Fatworks Fatworks
At Fatworks, we're at the forefront of a transformative movement in South Africa, where people are rediscovering the incredible benefits of beef tallow. Once a kitchen and skincare staple, beef tallow is making a strong comeback—not only for cooking but also for skin application and as a deodorant. This shift aligns with a growing global awareness of the true causes of chronic diseases.
For decades, big corporations promoted seed oils as a healthy alternative, beginning in the 1970s. To protect their interests, they bribed scientists to shift the blame for chronic diseases from seed oils to sugar, misleading the public. As more people become aware of this deception and recognize the dangers of seed oils—linked to inflammation, obesity, and heart disease—they are turning back to natural, traditional fats like beef tallow.
By embracing beef tallow, people are not only reclaiming their health but also rejecting decades of misinformation. Fatworks is proud to lead this movement, helping South Africans and people around the world return to real, nourishing ingredients that have been trusted for generations.

Trump Tasks RFK Jr. to Tackle Child Obesity Epidemic: A Vision for Organic Food and Eliminating Seed Oils
In a bold move, Donald Trump has tasked Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with addressing the child obesity epidemic if he is elected as president. RFK Jr.'s plan centers around two transformative actions: reintroducing organic food into children's diets and eliminating harmful seed oils from their meals.
RFK Jr. is determined to revolutionize the way we feed our children, recognizing that the rise in obesity and chronic health issues is linked to the widespread consumption of highly processed foods and seed oils. These oils, prevalent in school lunches and packaged snacks, are known to contribute to inflammation and other health problems. By replacing them with healthier fats and organic options, RFK Jr. aims to lay the groundwork for a healthier generation.
His push for organic food is about more than just avoiding pesticides—it's about ensuring that kids receive the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients they need to grow and thrive. Organic foods, free from harmful chemicals and GMOs, provide a cleaner, more nutritious alternative to the processed options that dominate children's diets today. Under RFK Jr.'s leadership, the goal is to make real, wholesome food the standard for every child in America.
Why Tallow Soap is Emerging as a Superior Alternative to Highly Processed Soaps
In an age where more consumers are becoming conscious of what they put on their skin, tallow soap is making a well-deserved comeback. Unlike highly processed soaps, which often contain synthetic ingredients, preservatives, and harsh chemicals, tallow soap offers a natural, nourishing alternative that’s as beneficial for your skin as it is for the environment.
1. Pure and Simple Ingredients
Tallow soap is crafted from rendered animal fat, which is rich in essential fatty acids that closely resemble the fats found in human skin. This similarity allows tallow soap to provide deep moisturization, leaving your skin soft and supple without the need for synthetic moisturizers or additives. The process of making tallow soap is straightforward, involving minimal processing, which means fewer chemicals and more of the natural goodness your skin craves.
2. Gentle on Skin
Highly processed soaps often strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Tallow soap, on the other hand, is known for its gentle cleansing properties. It cleanses effectively without disturbing the skin’s natural balance, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
3. Eco-Friendly Choice
Choosing tallow soap is also an environmentally friendly option. The use of tallow supports sustainable practices, as it repurposes a byproduct of the meat industry that might otherwise go to waste. Moreover, tallow soap’s minimal processing and absence of synthetic chemicals mean fewer pollutants are released into our waterways during manufacturing and use.
4. A Return to Tradition
There’s a reason tallow has been used in soapmaking for centuries. Our ancestors knew the value of using natural, wholesome ingredients for their skincare. As we become more aware of the downsides of modern, highly processed products, many are returning to traditional methods that prioritize quality and purity over mass production.
At Fatworks, we’ve embraced this tradition wholeheartedly, offering premium quality tallow soap made from the finest ingredients. Our soap bars are carefully crafted to deliver not just cleanliness but also nourishment and care, ensuring that your skin feels loved, not stripped. With varieties like Pine and Oat, Poppy Rose Geranium (Scrub), Activated Charcoal with Organic Lavender, and our gentle Baby Bar, there’s a tallow soap for every skin type and preference.
