AI is an awesome invention, in good hands (like ours). It helps doctors make early diagnosis for heavens sakes. Like, how great is that. We ourselves use it to read number plates, recognize suspicious faces, and create virtual lines that can’t be crossed, amongst a host of other new and exciting features. But unfortunately, there is a dark side to every good force, and AI scamming is it. Sigh, right! That said, while it may feel very ‘rise of the machines’ right now, don’t panic quite yet, but do be suspicious, of everything, including phone calls from loved ones.
- Be suspicious (like an introvert) of all calls, even from ‘known’ numbers. It may be a clone.
- AI is used to imitate the voices of people we love. Be careful of what you say and aware of what they say.
- Listen for inconsistencies in character. (Asking for money, talking about an emergency etc.)
- Have a safe word (not like that) - a family agreed upon word to confirm that the person you are talking to, is who they say they are.
- Disconnect from calls that seem a little ‘off’, then call back using your address book contacts (don’t redial).
- Ask specific time sensitive questions, like what did we watch on Netflix last night.
- Don’t give into emotional appeals. Scam artists are good at building trust.
- Scam artists use AI to mimic voices of authority as well. So be wary of bank calls and other institutions.

With the increase in armed robberies and burglaries, having immediate access to armed response is crucial. Marshall Security’s Cell Panic service offers you the peace of mind you deserve and gives you quick access to help when you need it most. Your safety is our priority. Stay alert, stay safe with Marshall Security.
Today is for the ultimate protectors and first responders, it is also for the brave and the deadly when crossed 😉. While that sounds like we may be talking about ourselves, we aren’t. Rather we’re talking about the people we learnt all of this from.
Thanks and happy Women’s Day/Month.
You can bank on a little fraudulent activity now and then, unfortunately. The scammers and spammers are out, trying to steal your information, your access and your money, and they are getting both more brazen and more inventive. So, please be extra careful with your details, especially when it comes to how you navigate your world online. Here are some pro tips to try and keep your info as safe as possible.
- Making an online purchase? Great. Just make sure that the web address reads HTTPS: that’s how you know it’s a verified and secure transaction.
- Don’t share your details with anyone. Ever.
- E-Wallets and payment methods like Apple and Google Pay are excellent. They come with extra layers of encryption built into the software and hardware of your phone. Try and use these methods where possible.
- As soon as you get a new card, log into your banking app and delink the old one. Remove it. Take it away. Burn it with fire. Then cut up the physical version too.
- You seem like a lovely person, great for a chat, but please note, the bank probably won’t call you. If someone claims to be the bank, you ask them to verify themselves, and don’t give them your details. If they really are the bank, they have these on hand.
- Don’t click on links or ‘verify’ your details when you receive requests via mail or text. These are never from your bank, but rather are examples of phishing.
- Call us In Case of Anything.
Security firms pride themselves on having a K9 response unit, and with good reason. All bad guys should have to mutter, “who let the dogs out” under their breath. At Marshall we of course can come to the party in this way, however when we talk about our K9 unit, sometimes we are in fact talking about the team that head out and help and rescue animals (generally dogs) that have gotten themselves into trouble.
In March for instance, our emergency dispatch line lit up with a request for urgent assistance. A 2 week puppy had fallen into a storm water drain and couldn’t get out.
Our team moved into action quickly, but upon arrival realized that more help would be needed and the eThekwini Fire Department was also called to the scene. After pipe cutting, volunteer digging (the local Neighbourhood Watch was hugely involved), concrete breaking and over 6 hours of hard labour, the puppy was reunited with her grateful mom. All in a days work for our other K9 unit.
Yes, Marshall Security North Coast is a ‘dedicated resource’. However you just read and interpreted that, you are right. Congratulations. ;)
To be clear on the difference between the two perspectives though, look at it this way. We have dedicated patrol vehicles in the Ballito and North Coast area, but the officers driving them are dedicated in a different (and, yes we agree, better) way.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, at Marshall Security we are big on community – with an emphasis on the UNITY part of that word.
We know that the best way to ensure safety, is to work with neighbourhoods, areas, and people to keep up to date with their queries and concerns, while informing them of our activities, reactions and proactivity. We’re in this together after all.
Anyway, this is why we are active members of 50+ WhatsApp groups in the areas we serve – whether covering place specific safety interests, or neighbourhood watches.
In line with this, we highly recommend that you join your local community group(s) because while the occasional person may ask for a rusk recipe or comment on some unrelated lesser spotted bird watching activity, for the most part it’s good to be in the know. They say knowledge is power, but we tend to think it’s more like knowledge is a weapon (one for self-defence), which we all can use.
Woke up to someone else enjoying your money more than you do? The audacity.
If you’re the victim of fraud the first thing you do, before even your cup of coffee, is hit up the bank fraud division line to figure out which card is the issue and have it blocked. You can sometimes also do this online via your banking app.
Once done, you may need to open a case with your local SAPS. Here’s how you should approach this in order to make it as quick and painless as possible.
- Block your card with the bank and find out what they specifically need from you and the SAPS. Generally, a case number for an opened case and a signed affidavit.
- Stop by the physical bank (you’re loving them today) and get a printed certified bank statement, which shows the fraudulent transaction(s).
- Provide the SAPS with a break-down (preferably not emotional) of what transpired, along with the statement and get the case number and written affidavit from them. (ps. You’ll have to write the affidavit).
- Always open the case at your nearest local SAPS. This is necessary for crime mapping. Yes, even when it’s international fraudulent activity.
- Supply your bank with the details and wait patiently, if not potentially a little hungry since you don’t have funds to buy things anymore. The case resolution generally takes about a week.
- Call us for advice when it comes to opening the case with the SAPS and In Case of Anything else.
We like to keep the peace. If we’re honest, we also like to keep a sidepiece. What? Just saying. The two things often go hand and hand when you are in security. Which is all to say, if you have to pick a side at any point in the future, we would like to politely suggest you pick ours, after all we already pick yours, every day. That’s why we’re here.

Did you spot us standing off in Westbrook this morning? We were on the scene, ensuring safety and peace. If you saw us in action, let us know your thoughts or share your pics! 🚨
Once you get to your destination, you may feel you can let your guard down a bit (those “relax, you’re on holiday now” vibes coming through), but we are here to tell you that is a no good, very bad idea. Stay vigilant at all times. Just because you know the country, doesn’t mean you know your place in this new place.
Here are some tips to keep you safe. Help your friends by sharing this post.
- When you arrive at your destination, remember while you are South African you are still a tourist in this situation and you need to be vigilant.
- Investigate your destination before you get there. Know what you want to see and where you want to go. Choose safe routes and options.
- Don’t go off the beaten track.
- Don’t go off alone.
- Share your live location with someone else if you are out exploring
- Listen to Alanis. Keep “one hand in your pocket” and the other gripping your cellphone. Don’t wear expensive jewelry or be obvious with phones, watches, rings and things.
- Cash is in fact, not king (it’s an easy target thing). But do keep a couple notes for emergencies.
Staying ‘local’ (i.e., in country) means that transportation is a big driver ;) – generally that falls on each of us to manage, as our public transportation options (save the Gautrain) are less than stellar. Here are some basic precautions that you should take, to stay safe while on the roads.
- Make sure your car is serviced before you go anywhere. We’re talking engine, tires, the works.
- Keep a medical aid kit in your boot. Super useful in so many situations.
- Make sure your jack is in the back. Maybe refrain from a YouTube tutorial unless absolutely necessary, and wait for roadside assist.
- Take some direction. Make sure your phone is charged and that you have Waze or Google Maps on.
- Not driving? Please use Uber when e-hailing, but make sure that you are booking their services through the app, so that you can be tracked.
- Car rental is a solid option.
- Call us if things have gone awry and you are still in Durban or its surrounds.
There you go. Quite literally. 😉
We hope you travel safe while you are away, but we also hope you employ the following safety tips before you lock up and leave us for a bit.
- Pack your car inside the garage (keep the door closed until you are ready to leave). FYI. We are also packing. But not like that.
- Do a perimeter check for obstructions before you go. (check fence, lights and cameras).
- Set lights to timers or motion sensors.
- House sitter rules. Show your house sitter the security features.
- Put pets in their own hotel if there is nobody home. Don’t forget to pack their treats.
- Unplug your appliances.
- Switch on your alarm (we just sighed; you probably heard it from there).
- Call us and let us know your movements (Yes, we are momming you and you will like it).

As we embrace Eid this year, surrounded by family and friends. We want to wish our dear clients, customers, team, and loved ones a happy and healthy Eid.
Just when we got this whole loadshedding thing as waxed as possible, all things considered (it only took us a decade or so), the bad guys decided to level it up to stage whatever comes after the one where they steal your copper and prevent the power from ever coming back on again – there’s you sitting, sweating, watching your clock as it strikes 2.01 and the aircon is still off. Good times. It’s true though, loadshedding is used as a criminal tool – the perfect opportunity to a) do bad guy things in the dark and b) work to a schedule. ESP is available to everyone after all.
Considering the bad guys are out and about, here are some safety tips to protect you and your copper.
- You’re hot. We love that for you. But don’t leave doors and windows open. It makes you an easy (opportunistic) target.
- Secure gates and fences. Have them on battery backup if they are automatic and electrified respectively.
- Invest in some cameras for your property.
- Get beams and arm your alarm (yes, even in loadshedding)
- Look into motion sensor lights. Nothing a criminal in the dark likes less than a nice strip of bright light, apart from us, they aren’t fans of us either.
- Paint your copper (black or white are good options). It makes it look like plastic (tricksy tricksy 😉), but it may also be a deterrent as it can devalue the copper.
- Call us, In Case of Anything.
Something that we mustn’t lose sight of in the discourse over copper theft, is the fact that it is an incredibly dangerous undertaking. Copper thieves, the guys that are actually doing the digging and cutting and clipping are risking their lives for a few rand - copper is one of the best conductors of electricity after all. However, they are not the only ones that may suffer the consequences. Even in a ‘successful’ job, when copper is stolen it compromises entire electrical systems and puts electrical workers and even members of the public at risk.
If you have reason to believe that copper has been stolen from your property or a premises, we would advise that you approach with extreme caution, because there may be a variety of safety issues that are now live. Rather call a professional, report the issue and call us, in Case of Anything.
