Botox is a brand name for a drug made from botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum.

While this toxin can cause a life-threatening type of food poisoning called botulism, in small, controlled doses, it has medical & cosmetic uses.

Medical Uses:
Botox is used to treat certain medical conditions such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), overactive bladder, & muscle spasms.

Cosmetic Uses:
Botox is most commonly known for its cosmetic use in reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles & fine lines. It works by temporarily paralyzing or relaxing specific muscles, which smooths the skin & reduces the visibility of wrinkles.

The effects of Botox typically last for three to six months, depending on how active one is, after which the treatment can be repeated to maintain the desired results.

Botox was first developed for medical purposes rather than cosmetic ones. Initially, it was invented & approved to treat a condition called strabismus, or crossed eyes, in the late 197'0s & early 1980's. Dr. Alan B. Scott, an ophthalmologist, conducted research on using botulinum toxin to treat strabismus & blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking).

The idea was to use the toxin to temporarily weaken the overactive muscles causing these eye conditions.

In 1989, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved botox for the treatment of these conditions. It wasn’t until the late 1990's that Botox's cosmetic potential was discovered.

Patients receiving Botox for medical reasons began reporting that their wrinkles were also disappearing, which led to further research & eventually the widespread use of botox for cosmetic purposes to reduce wrinkles & fine lines. In 2002, the FDA approved Botox for cosmetic use in treating frown lines between the eyebrows, marking the beginning of its popularity in aesthetic treatments.
