Dr Rekha Rambharose of UWC has been selected as a finalist in the 2024 HERS-SA Awards in the Emerging Young Women Leaders (Support) category. This recognition celebrates women under 40 who are making waves in leadership roles within higher education.

Congratulations to the Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy (IDIA) team, a partnership with the University of Cape Town, The University of the Western Cape and the University of Pretoria, with Interim Director: Dept of Astronomy, Prof Patrick Woudt, winner of the NSTF-South32.
The team received the award for their cutting-edge infrastructure and management, which facilitates global collaboration in astronomy, empowering researchers to analyse complex SET data with unprecedented efficiency.

Congratulations to Dr Michelle Lochner, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Astronomy, at The University of the Western Cape and Staff Scientist at South African Radio Astronomy Observatory - SARAO for being selected as a finalist for the TW Kambule-NSTF Researcher Award.
Dr Lochner works on developing cutting edge artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to interrogate massive astronomical datasets sourced from millions of galaxies, hunting for new scientific discoveries in data gathered from radio telescopes such as Meer KAT and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), as well as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, an optical telescope under construction in Chile. She used her algorithm, called Astronomaly, to discover a new radio source called βSAURONβ, found in Meer KAT data, which could be the remnant of a massive explosion as two supermassive black holes merged.
