Q: Why the wedding industry?

A: Long story short, I did not choose the wedding industry; the wedding industry chose me! It never occurred to me that this could be a career—Event planner, yes, but a wedding stationery designer? What a pleasant discovery that was!

When I was retrenched while saving for and planning our wedding (in 2020), designing wedding invitations and websites felt like the natural thing to do, as it was a big topic on my mind. That is how it started, and it just grew from there. I remember the first time a client ordered something from me, and my first thought was, 'I cannot believe someone would pay ME to design something for them.' I was so in awe of the concept and made it my mission to create beautiful things and make a career from it.

I truly love the wedding industry and being a part of people's love stories. Even with the ups and downs, there are so many good things that I enjoy about weddings and creating beautiful stationery. In the coming years, I plan to extend and branch out to include more services and really grow my business. I have always had the dream of having multiple businesses (or one business with multiple sections) and dabbling in a variety of things. I love expressing myself, being creative, and trying new things. That being said, my main goal is maintaining the standard and quality I have worked so hard to create, and that will not change.
I truly feel like the wedding industry is a good fit for me and my passions, so I have no regrets only a lot of lessons learned from.

Q&A // #1

Q: Why the name

A: Fun Fact: Blommekind Kuns & Ontwerp was not the first name I had. Two years after I graduated high school (2018) I started my Facebook and Instagram page under “Broken Arts Club” At that time I was very lost & confused as to what I wanted to do in life. I felt like everyone knew where they were heading except for me. The name was a reference to ‘Kintsugi’ which is the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold — a metaphor for embracing your flaws and imperfections. Which is such a fantastic practice, but it was also a reference to how broken and lost I felt at that time.

In high school I felt like I didn’t quite fit in, I also felt like the school system was forcing me into a box that I did not want to be in. I knew from quite a young age that I did not want to study, get a degree, and work a corporate job for the rest of my life. I wanted to be the owner of my own successful business & do what I love to do every day.

This is where the problem came in. I really thought that I don’t have any options. In my 18-year-old mind I thought that I had to suck it up, get a degree in something meaningful and get a job at a big company, and maybe someday I will get to start my own business.

Without boring you with the details, I took quite a detour before starting my business: I got a certificate in Graphic design (this was a great choice), I studied a year at Unisa (This was a poor choice and I did not finish), I had a few corporate jobs in between (I learnt a lot from these) & I finally took a leap of faith, quit my last corporate job to do this full time (about a year and a half ago) and haven’t looked back since.

So, to get back to the question. I chose Blommekind Kuns & Ontwerp as my name because I have always seen myself as a flower child. I love flowers, butterflies, and nature. I believe in kindness and love. I have always wanted to own a VW Beetle. When I rebranded in 2020 I wanted the name to embody me & what I would like my business to stand for - I wanted to spread love, joy, positivity & kindness wherever I go with whatever I do.
