This past Monday we weren’t just ushered into a new week but a new month, and a significant given South Africa’s history.

As a creative agency, we thought about what would be an appropriate way to commemorate a day and celebrate women who, even after being legally classified by the Apartheid government as perpetual minors, being denied the freedom to live freely in the country of their birth, decided that they would rise in rebellion against a system designed to make them fearful and defining them as inferior, a system committed to stripping them of their dignity.

We couldn’t find any one way to honour the lives of the 20 000 women but in some attempt to honour their lives, the sacrifices they shouldn’t have had to make and burdens they should not have had to bear, we will spend the rest of the month trying to find an appropriate balance between the necessity of celebrating South African women but also commemorating the ones who may not have lived long enough to see women appointed as Public Protector’s of South Africa, the Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, renowned authors and poets, CEOs of JSE listed companies and the many others who can freely choose their professions and how they want to exist in the world.

Join us this month as we balance, as best we can, the work of commemorating AND celebrating. We hope that at the end of it, we would NOT have undermined the significance of August 9th, that we would not have lost sight of the work needed to eradicate the horror women living in South Africa, [the r**e capital of the world, the most unequal country in the world and one of the countries in the Southern African region with the highest gender pay gap amongst women and men (with the same education)] must endure.
