Sweet potato from the garden. Grilled in the

Although it is expensive to grow with the current water rates, it is still rewarding.

Super nice deep fried, crumbed eggplant. I almost think it is better than crumbed mushrooms.
The season is almost over. Will definitely plant again next year.

This morning’s harvest.
Pumpkin, butternut, eggplant, paprika, sweet peppers, jalapeno, cayenne chillies, quinces and grenadillas.

13/03/2024

I made yoghurt today. Sort of challenging in a way that I initially didn’t think the outcome will be anything to expect. Then after 9 hours I think it looked pretty good.

13/03/2024

20 grenadillas and syrup plus Vodka. We call it “pitte”. So love this drink after a hard day’s work.

Baie interessant.

My first experience with aubergines/brinjals/eggplant was a dish with minced meat that I really didn’t like too much. I never bought it again and never had it as a preferred vegetable in my garden. But I‘m a sucker for seeds, so when I got blessed with some seeds I had to germinate and grow.

I made this Spicy Aubergine Chutney today and I‘m very much impressed. These little egg shaped eggplant fruit will definitely have a space in my garden again next year.
There are still a few recipes to test, but this one will be a favourite.

First harvest of Japanese Eggplant this morning. I’ve never been a fan of eggplant, but this is tastier. I still have lots to learn e.g. when it is the right time to harvest, but experience is the best way of learning. The ones becoming yellow are too mature already. No problem. We’ll have seed again.
Now looking for the perfect recipe to add to my preserves collection.

Purslane many of you know as a w**d in the garden. A w**d that distributes at a vast rate because of the many tiny seeds it produces.

Did you know that Purslane is an edible w**d?

Purslane is high in omega 3 fatty acids and loaded with anti-oxidants, but it also contains oxalic acid so people with kidney disease and high uric acid should rather avoid it.
The stems and seeds contain almost three times more oxalic acid than the leaves.

Purslane can be eaten raw in salads. If combined with yoghurt the oxalate content will diminish.
When cooked or pickled the oxalate content can also lower by about 27%.
Purslane are also used in stews as a thickener.

We decided to try out a Purslane Relish recipe. It was time consuming as I wanted less of the seeds in my product, but very quick to make. It came out really nice.
