It does not feel all too long ago that we were approaching the end of the 2022 tax year, yet here we are once again with the conclusion of the tax year fast approaching. It is this time of the year that is important to highlight how one can maximize one's tax benefits through topping up ones retirement annuity (RA).

But how exactly does this work?

Anybody who contributes towards an RA is entitled to a tax deduction at the end of the tax year. This deduction is capped at 27.5% of either your taxable income or your remuneration, whichever amount is lower, and this amount is capped at R350 000. This occurs regardless of whether you are contributing towards your pension independently, or if an employed is doing so on your behalf. Thus if you have not yet reached this limit, you can do so by adding to your RA in the form of a lumpsum before 28 February 2023, and this will decrease your tax liability.
