The Information Regulator has reached a verdict and issued an enforcement notice to credit bureau Trans Union after a 2022 large-scale data breach, and consequent infringement of the PoPI Act.

Among other things, the adverse findings included improper implementation of safeguards, an insecure password-use habit, and many other IT related incidents.

These are the corrective guidelines we introduce and uphold daily, and we do think some of these findings could have been prevented.

A guide for Business Owners

In the last month, we've been contracted in to redesign so many critical systems as a result of insufficient critical point identifications, and lack of disaster recovery and business continuity plans. No best practices found and a neglect of current standards.

Business owners should understand how crucial IT Systems and Networking is to their business! With every business comes IT - and with every IT system you need to know what it does, why it does it, and what happens when it doesn't do it. That "not doing" part is called Disaster - for disaster, you need recovery. That's called a Disaster Recovery plan. Practice it, know it, live it.

The period during which it is not doing the thing it must do, is called business continuity planning. How does the business operations deviate temporarily without the system doing the thing, so that the business doesn't stop dead in its tracks? When you have neither - the next question is "how deep does your bank account go to make the problem go away?" This point of conversation must never be reachable.

It is imperative to invest in your IT Systems, not only for refreshing it now and then, but for ongoing maintenance. It's a living thing. Don't maintain it, and it'll schedule time at the worst possible moment on your behalf for maintenance.
