Touch those bo***es ladies 👙

🦩If you are over 40 years old, set a date and make this a monthly routine e.g on the first of each month. May we suggest before taking a shower?
🦩If you are still menstruating, it is advised to do your self exam +- 7 days after your period.

1️⃣Start by looking in the mirror, shoulders straight, with your arms in different positions - next to your sides, on your hips. Are your ladies looking their usual beautiful selves? Size, shape, skin colour and contour? LOOK FOR: Dimpling, Puckering, Bulging, Ni**le inversion/retraction, Ni**le discharge, Redness, Soreness, Rash, Swelling.
2️⃣Now lift your arms above your head. Watch how your breasts move. Is one moving less than usual? Are there new dimples as you move? Look for the same changes as mentioned in step 1.
3️⃣Time to get in the shower. The soap and water will make feeling for lumps easier. Use the opposite hand to breast (i.e. left hand to feel right breast, raise right arm above head). Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together.
4️⃣You can either use vertical lines (like mowing a lawn) or a circular motion starting from the ni**le outward, as long as you make sure you feel your entire breast including the ni**le - from your collar bone to the top of your abdomen and from your armpit to your cleavage. (It is important to feel all the way to your collar bone as the tail of your breast tissue ends there.)
5️⃣Make sure you feel with different pressures so as to feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts (light pressure for skin and tissue just beneath, medium pressure for the middle and firm pressure to reach the deep tissue - you should be able to feel your rib cage with the firm pressure!)
6️⃣Feel into your armpit for any unusual bumps or swollen glands.
7️⃣Repeat this examination by lying down. (Prop yourself up with a pillow on the side you’re examining to flatten your breast on your chest so she doesn’t drop to the side).

And you’ve done it! 🎀

Be sure to book for a formal examination with a doctor or registered nurse practitioner as per the guidelines in our previous post.

Early detection can save your life! 🏩

OMW I have risk factors! Now what?
Don’t panic, we’ve got your back.🙌🏻

It is important to know your risk for developing breast cancer and following the screening guidelines accordingly. There are schools of thought and research underway regarding hyper vigilance, over testing and unnecessary investigations. For now the recommended guidelines in South Africa are as listed above and, as mentioned, should be followed based on each individual’s risk.

Screening should include BOTH clinical examination as well as breast imaging.
🦩10-15% of clinically detected cancers of the breasts cannot be visualised on mammography, and
🦩approximately one third of breast cancers visualised on mammography will not be detected clinically.

If you are concerned that you might have a higher than average risk for breast cancer, contact your health care practitioner.

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer for South African women of all races, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 27. The risk for breast cancer increases as a person gets older, but many women under 40 have been diagnosed with breast cancer. 👙
Although male breast cancer is rare, Breast Health Foundation recorded that in South Africa, 1-3% of all breast cancers happen in men.

Risk factors that increase your risk of developing breast cancer:
🦩Age - your risk increases with age with most breast cancers being diagnosed after 50.
🦩Family history and genetic mutations - having a direct family member who was diagnosed with breast/endometrial/ovarian or prostate cancer (especially at a young age) or if you have a BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation
🦩Personal history - if you had any of the above cancers yourself (especially breast cancer) or proliferative forms of fibrocystic disease in your breasts
🦩If your me**es started before the age of 12 or menopause after the age of 55
🦩Having no children or having your first child after the age of 30
🦩Breast density - having dense breasts (More connective than fatty tissue in your breasts), you will only know this after your first mammogram :)
🦩Previous radiation therapy to your chest or breast area
🦩Not being physically active - women who don’t exercise often have a higher risk of getting breast cancer
🦩Being overweight/obese - especially after menopause, women who are overweight have an increased risk of developing breast cancer compared to those at a healthy weight
🦩Taking hormones - some forms of hormone replacement therapy taken during menopause can raise your risk for breast cancer when taken for more than five years (HRT is an elaborate topic that will be discussed at a later stage)
🦩Smoking and excessive alcohol use

Book a consult with your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns so you can discuss screening and testing that is appropriate for you.
