Is there anything to draw the eye in the winter garden? If not, create a focal point in those areas of your garden to which the eye is naturally drawn, for instance at the end of a path. Make sure the focal point is in proportion to the garden. For example, in a large garden you can install a gazebo, a pond and waterfall, a large statue or a strikingly shaped evergreen tree such as a palm tree. In a small garden choose an urn, large container, micro water feature or a bench.

Brightly coloured winter annuals are a creative way to fill empty winter flower-beds. A variety of winter-flowering bedding plants can be found at any nursery or garden centre and should be planted in May or June to ensure a glowing winter garden. Examples of winter plants suitable for sunny positions in the garden include Lobelias, Petunias, vygies, Calendulas, sweet-peas and Violas.

Top tip: If you buy wood for heating, save the ash and sprinkle it on the garden in spring. This is an excellent source of potash which strengthens cell walls of plants.

Oranjezicht City Farm and Market Day

No, they're not painted or dyed!

Purple cauliflower gets its beautiful hue, which can vary from pale to jewel-toned, from the presence of the antioxidant anthocyanin, which is also found in red cabbage and red wine. Purple cauliflower also goes by the variety names Sicilian Violet, Violet Queen and Grafitti Cauliflower.

Purple and green cauliflower hold the same firmness, crumbly florets, and texture as their white counterpart, with subtle differences in taste. Their flavour is mild, slightly sweet, and creamy with nutty nuances.

Roasting cauliflower gives it a unique flavour, and if you allow some pieces to caramelize this adds a slight smokiness. The addition of garlic and the splash of lemon juice help bring out extras taste. See recipe here http://www.spiciefoodie.com/2013/07/19/garlicky-oven-roasted-purple-cauliflower-with-a-splash-of-lemon-juice/

Thanks to Basilhof Farm in George, we'll have organically grown purple and green cauliflower at Market Day this Saturday - along with many white ones too.

Raised Bed Gardening.

Raised bed gardens with block style layout have many advantages, including the following:

Higher yields and less area to w**d – The block style layout, eliminating unnecessary walkways increases yields by five-fold over the traditional row-path-row garden layout.

Reduced soil compaction – Established walkways keep foot traffic off the growing bed, reducing soil compaction.

Earlier planting – The raised bed facilitates better runoff and drainage allowing soil to warm faster in the spring. Beds can be covered with plastic during spring rains, allowing for early planting even in rainy years.

Soil improvement – The raised bed is a clearly defined area where the gardener can concentrate on soil improvement techniques, (e.g., the addition of soil organic matter). In situations where the soil is poor and limits plant growth, good planting soil may be added to the box.

Architectural interest – Raised beds become an architectural feature of the landscape design.

Accessible gardening – The raised bed is ideal for enabling persons with limited mobility to garden.
