CTII - Cape Town Interfaith Initiative

The quest for inter religious understanding in the Western Cape To generate good coexistence values in our province.

Born out of the 1999 Parliament of World Religions, the Cape Town Interfaith Initiative was established in 2000 and has been successful in bringing the interfaith agenda into the mainstream of religious and political consciousness. As the coordinating body for the interfaith movement in the Western Cape, it is seen as the driving force in the pursuit of inter-religious understanding and dialogue.

Buddhist Inspired Dialogue Retreat, Cape Town, South Africa (2023) 04/09/2023

As part of her KAICIID Fellowship, Jenny Canau organised a Buddhist Inspired Dialogue Retreat, from the 11 - 13 August, as a way of bringing together Buddhists in Cape Town to learn, share and dialogue around the different experiences of Buddhism in Cape Town. This was the first of its kind in Cape Town. The Retreat was open to all. Participants attended from the Theravadin-Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana Schools of Buddhism. And also included participants connected to Buddhism from the Theosophical Society, the Unitarians, CTII and people inspired by Buddhist values and principles. The hope is to get more Buddhist inspired dialogue's happening in South Africa. Watch the video below to enjoy the highlights!

It really was a soul food banquet. Thank you so much to everyone who joined us. Looking forward to seeing some of you at Groote Kerk tomorrow for our next World Interfaith Harmony Week event, Recommitting to Compassion

Our intercontinental interfaith family grew a bit bigger yesterday!

What a privilege to be joined by six fantastic and passionate speakers from the US, South Africa, and Scotland for a special collaboration for World Interfaith Harmony Week with CTII - Cape Town Interfaith Initiative and The Interfaith Center of New York, which gave people a chance to hear poetry from a great diversity of traditions – not only from the speakers but also from other attendees, as they met together in breakout rooms.

We heard a beautiful mix of original poetry and classics that have impacted hearts and minds for generations.

In her closing remarks, Rev. Berry Behr from Cape Town Interfaith Initiative reflected:

“The Sufi poet, Rumi, told us in one of his poems that ‘There are many ways to kneel and kiss the ground’. What we have seen and experienced here tonight is that poetry itself provides an infinite number of them. Poetry seems to seep into us at such a deep level, connect not only our hearts to each other but also connecting us to the soil and the earth beneath our feet, and to the Creator God who is around us, and in us, and everywhere…We have all been so touched by the remarkable poets of this evening.”

Our heartfelt thanks to all who participated.
