🐶 Stepping In to Stop the Cycle – 100 Lives, Countless Futures Saved

🚑 On Monday, we launched an urgent offensive against the relentless tide that is pet overpopulation. Today, the fight continues.

The numbers don’t lie. Last year alone, 23,621 unwanted and stray animals found their way to our doors. We are in crisis and animals are too! With 89.6% of animals counted during our census in Langa being unsterilised, the number of homeless, hungry, and neglected animals will inevitably skyrocket unless we act now.

We refuse to do nothing while unchecked breeding forces a compassionate euthanasia burden on us that we have no desire to carry. We’re back in Langa today and we’re hoping that by the end of the day, we will have sterilised at least 100 animals at our Civic Hall field hospital. When animals are unwanted, they suffer. We see this every day and so every animal sterilised is a victory in our battle against both cruelty and pet overpopulation. We’re changing the narrative, one animal at a time, and we won’t stop until every animal is wanted, every animal has a home and not one healthy animal faces euthanasia.

🚨 Animals are being bred faster than we can rescue them.

No matter how hard we try, we can’t rescue our way out of a pet overpopulation crisis! But We Can Step In! And we are!

Last year, we faced the admission of 23,621 unwanted and stray animals. And with recent census results from Langa revealing that 89.6% of animals in the areas counted are unsterilised, the situation is about to get much worse.

🚑 But we’re fighting back!

This is a call to arms and the only weapon we have in our arsenal is sterilisation. The fight began today when we transformed the Langa Civic Hall into a field hospital, where we’ll be sterilising 100 animals in just two days. This will immediately prevent the birth of an estimated 950 animals in the next 12 months.

Without sterilisation, those 950 animals could each reproduce at a similar rate, leading to a potential population growth of 8,550 animals in two years. If we don’t act, this number could escalate to 46,050 in three years and an astonishing 230,250 in four years.

Every animal should be wanted. Every animal should have a home. No animal should face euthanasia because of limited space or resources. The time to act is now! Will you step in with us? Becky is a medium sized adult collie mix. She is a friendly, active dog who would suit an active lifestyle. She has a medium length coat that does require regular brushing and unfortunately, she did come in looking a little neglected, so her current hairstyle is a little “uneven”. Raven is the sweetest, SPECIAL NEEDS pup! Our vets have confirmed that little Raven is DEAF.

We recommend a very special home for this sweetheart where the clients will work alongside a qualified behaviourist/trainer to teach her “hand signals” and set little Raven up for success! She may grow to be roughly medium in size as an adult dog. She’s all legs at the moment and full of exuberance and joy- as pups can be!

Rossi came in as a stray and was unclaimed. He’s a charming little chap with such a joyful personality. He is still learning to walk on a leash and loves spending time with staff and volunteers. Rossi is a smallish breed mix- short in stature, yet big in personality. He is active, playful and curious- a good match for a young family with kids to keep him stimulated and entertained.

🚨 3 Swartland communities awoke to disaster in the early hours of the morning when two retention dams collapsed, and fast flowing water ran through the streets, shifting houses and leaving devastation in its wake. The communities of Dassenberg, Chatsworth and Riverlands are flooded while a 4th dam's water levels are being closely monitored. Inspectors from the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and Swartland SPCA are on the ground, actively seeking out survivors, displaced animals and those at further risk of harm. There have been many animal casualties.

🚑 We are working closely with the Disaster Risk Management Centre and we have an Inspector stationed at the Joint Operations Centre to facilitate a co-ordinated emergency response to the areas of greatest need. The flooded areas can only be accessed on foot and we’re hard at work searching for the survivors amongst those whose lives have sadly already been lost to the water. Discussions with community leaders suggest that hundreds of farm animals and horses are missing and that all animal feed has been washed away.

🚨 SPCA Rescue Dogs Following Shocking Abuse in Goodwood

A disturbing incident involving the abuse of a dog opposite a school in Goodwood was brought to light last week through a video being widely circulated on social media. Prompted by this alarming footage, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA promptly launched an investigation, determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.

📸 Despite initial challenges in tracking down the individuals involved, the breakthrough came when vigilant community members provided crucial information. This led our Inspectors to a residential property in Goodwood, where they discovered the abused dog from the video with a litter of 4 puppies and another two dogs. All the animals on the property were rescued earlier today, after our Inspectors obtained a court order from the Goodwood Magistrates Court.

The video, which vividly captured the abuse and shows two men forcefully handling the dog, pinning her to the ground, and carrying her by the hind legs while she screamed and struggled—has understandably caused widespread outrage. This footage will serve as a key piece of evidence in the impending cruelty case against the two men involved.

Criminal charges of animal cruelty will be laid against the two men in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, with the accused potentially facing penalties of up to R40,000 and/or 12 months imprisonment, along with a criminal record, if convicted.

🙏🏼 The Cape of Good Hope SPCA wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the community for their instrumental role in location and rescue of these dogs. We can't fight cruelty alone, and we're thankful for the vigilance of communities who report crimes against animals and those who step in with us to protect the vulnerable.

One of our inspectors brought in little Bernardo as a stray after finding the little fearful guy in a ditch. After some TLC in our hospital, he is ready for a new start in adoptions. Bernardo is recommended for an active, mature home or with teenage kids. We advise a secure perimeter to keep him safe and secure in his new home. He is roughly 8kgs in weight and is gaining confidence day by day. He loves his walks and is an active little chap.
