THIS IS MY STORY…..

My name is Ntombomzi Yvonne Mafenuka. I was born the 1st of January 1969 in the Cape; yes, I am a new year baby.

My parents are from Eastern Cape in the Willowvale district.

Willowvale is a town in Amathole District Municipality in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Town in Gcalekaland, 32 km southeast of Idutywa. It was established as a military post in 1879 and so named because of its location on a stream with willow trees on its banks.
Although I am proud of my town, not much happens there and opportunities for young ladies are few and far between.

I knew if I wanted to make a success of my life, I needed to move to the city. Today I am the housekeeping supervisor at the Aquarius Luxury Apartments in Blouberg.

For a young girl from Willowvale, this is a massive achievement and something that I am very proud of.

The fact that I was recognized, gives me that extra energy to go the extra mile. The support I get from my managers and colleagues motivates me to do more and more.

Aquarius Luxury Apartment is like a second home to me; I look forward to every day and the challenges it brings with it.

My name is Robin-Lee August and I'm the daughter of a soldier in the military.

Being a Military Brat has caused me a lot of pain but it has also allowed me to learn. Most people know that being in the military means that you are going to move around a lot. However most people don't think of the psychological challenges that this creates. One would think that moving would become easier each time. But as I got older it only got harder. Each time we move I have to leave behind any friends, structure, stability, and comfort. I have had friends and mostly good experiences, but moving still destroys that happiness. Knowing that I will be moving at the end of the year causes me to not want to make friends and for others to not be friends with me.

Now the good parts of being a military brat. I have had so many more experiences than most people have. I have been all over South Africa . I've been to national monuments and seen some of the most beautiful scenes. Also I have lived in so many different cultures and I feel that I understand life and people maybe a little bit better. Oftentimes when we move I am surprised by how little the locals know about the world outside of their hometown. It shocks me that there are many people that have never seen the ocean or a true forest. I often take these things for granted and forget that I have been privileged to be able to live in many different places.

I currently work at Aquarius Luxury Suites as a receptionist. My journey started in housekeeping as a linen attendant so I'm grateful I got the opportunity to work in a team and to learn about linen, cleaning and what not to use.

I soon thereafter got a promotion thanks to two amazing ladies that gave me an opportunity to grow within the company. I'm happy and healthy and still learning so much and hope to be as independent, strong and successful as my managers.

The relationships we build at work go beyond colleagues, they become family ties. When coworkers become family, work becomes more than just a job – it becomes a shared purpose. The love and care we receive from our work family make the daily grind more bearable. No matter what happens, we always have each other's backs. A team is not just a group of people, but a collective soul that thrives on trust and camaraderie. Our strength lies in our unity and the love we share. We laugh together, cry together, and conquer obstacles together – that's what makes us a family. Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.
