Hi I’m Leila, I do the designing and production for Threads.
I spent my 20’s and 30’s traveling voraciously and lived overseas for almost 20 years.
I finally feel like I’ve found home and feel settled and rooted in a way that I didn’t before. I am very lucky to live just in front of a beautiful mountain that I walk on every day, it is my therapy and my inspiration… in fact most of the cushion covers started up there! My love of fynbos grows every year and our cushions are really a celebration of gratitude for this beautiful place I get to call home!

Hello! I’m Emma.
Leila and I started threads that bind us 8 years ago. I had been living in London doing a very corporate job. One morning on my way to work (about 10 years ago now!) I saw a sign that said “do what you love, love what you do”, and something clicked.
Fast forward 10 years, and here we are! I don’t love everything I do, and I don’t necessarily get to do everything I love, but I know that I have chosen this. I absolutely love the fact that we created a business out of nothing. I love that every day is different. I love not having to go into an office and work for someone else. I love that we can employ women and build connections with them. I love the connections I have made with other makers and business owners along the way. I even love the difficult days when nothing seems to go right.
I have grown as a person through this experience and I am so grateful that something made me walk a different route to work that morning 10 years ago.

Meet Lilian

Lilian has been with us since we started, she has seen the highs and lows, and all the in betweens.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Lilian has two children, a daughter about to start high school, and a son who is passionate about rugby!

Quality control and laundering, are Lilian’s department and she owns it! She’s also always willing to step up and help wherever help is needed.

We are so lucky to have Lilian as part of our team 💛

This Women’s Month we are honouring the women that make up the threads that bind us team - we start with our star Sales Assistant, Marylin. Here’s what she had to say:
“Hi🩷
My name is Marylin Siziba, the founder of Tshengi’s Creatives, as well as sales assistant at threads that bind us. If you are looking for a reason to not give up in whatever you want to accomplish in life, then here it is. I’m a single working mother who works 2 jobs (threads and my business), and absolutely love it. I have been a part of the threads Family for 2 years now, and I absolutely appreciate and love the space. They are a team of women who push and inspire one another to be the best that they can be. They push you to your limit in the most positive way possible, and because of them, as well as One of Each, I hold the job I have, and a group of supportive women. Just know that no matter what life holds against you, you can always believe that this too shall pass. Happy women’s month 🩷🌸”

We were asked last week if we would run a refresher workshop, so we’re putting the feelers out… would you be interested?

We have consciously chosen to use loomstate h**p as it is a less processed fabric which means fewer chemicals in your napkins, and less water and energy used in the production.

It is also a gorgeous durable fabric, which softens and gets better with use and age. So we encourage you to use them everyday!

Okay, so we just couldn’t wait until next week to put our new protea cushions in the shop! How beautiful are they!?!

Each panel is hand painted and then stitched, using freehand machine embroidery to draw with thread. Leila builds up the layers of thread using different colours to create the protea. Each one is different, perfectly imperfect just how we like it!

Nan contacted us after buying a hand painted and stitched cushion from our shop at the V&A Watershed, she had an idea for a TV cover and the rest is history!

Our choice of fabric is conscious, and so is the way we use these lovely natural fibres. Our zero waste cushion covers make use of all our selvedges, and trust us when we say there are metres and metres of them! So rather than putting them in landfill, we are creating something beautiful.
