Our farm is on the journey to form a biodynamic PGS with local like minder farmers administered through the Biodynamic Agricultural Association of Southern Africa Bdaasa. We visited on the 15th of December to get to know the farmers and the land they manage. Farmers from and joined us. We will be visiting their farms in the coming months.
Our produce stall at the Earth Fair Food & Craft Market. We'll be here on Saturdays for the coming months (24 and 31 December tbc) displaying our produce and promoting small scale, local and organic farming.
If you are around Plumstead and have some time, come meet us and see what we have to offer at Earth Fair Food & Craft Market. We'd really like to find out more from you about where you source your vegetables, what you are looking for when shopping for vegetables and how we could make you home cooking exciting, easy and healthy.
Not all that far away, on the slopes of Constantia, is a herd of cattle making a difference around the vineyards. They graze away while leaving behind valuable left overs that contribute greatly to the health of the soil below. This through the microbial life they harbour in their gut. These microbes go to work in the soil decomposing organic matter and contributing to the soil food web ultimately contributing to a fertile soil.
As organic farmers, cow manure (and any animal manure for that matter) is the golden ingredient to compost production. No need for compost activators here. This smelly gold makes its way through the composting process and finally ends up (in a different form) feeding the soil that feeds our plants.
Thanks brutally cute and gracious creatures. We are fortunate to have you so close and a farmer who has welcomed us over.
Its possible that you could be collecting a freshly harvested selection of produce from our farm in Plumstead every week, hours from harvesting. These grown using organic principals. We really want to establish our farm as a site where community and small scale agriculture flourish as one. A space where people can connect with how their food is produce, the people that care for the farm and the processes that take the resources we have around us and use them in a thriving mini ecosystem. All while interacting with other interested members of the community.
Currently we have a steady supply of carrots, kale, cabbage, leeks, spring onion, pok choi and lettuce grown in our soil. These are available, ideally to order, weekly. There will soon be quite few new items on our farm grown list. We also have a wide selection of produce we source from a growing number of trusted suppliers such as Metro Organics, Rocklands Farm, Simons Town, Mzanzi Organics The Joyful Kitchen
Send us a DM or get in touch via WhatsApp to receive a weekly availability list. You can be sure the produce we grow is as far as we can control toxin free, grown in a healthy environment and likely as fresh as you can get it.
The coincidence of spring and our greatly improved soil health has our Plumstead farm brimming with more than we can get to our current customers. Its a nice challenge to have.
Currently we have plump pak choi, fragrant leeks and spring onions, reborn black palm and curly kale, impressive cabbage (though we still have some small ones to get through) kept company by sweet carrots.
The greatly improved soil is thanks to our master of compost production and soil health manager who seem to have limitless energy to get on with this demanding role.
The rest of our team (Vera, Yamkela and Mbasa) ensure that regular planting and plant care gets us all the way to a bounty of harvest. Its amazing to see how we go from skinny leeks after 4 months of growth (mostly on account of the cooler months) to plump leeks after 3 months.
Diversity within a farm and garden is a key element for health. Our ecosystem of plants, animals and microbial life are a treasured as is the case at all natural (organic) farms. The inevitable happens, the flowers come out and the insects appear to feed, find a home and reproduce.
What excites natural farmers is the ability of the larvae of some of these insects such as hover flies (pic 1), lady bugs (pic 2) and lace wings (more active at night) devour aphids. With the adults around, we know their larvae are feeding. So we now slow down on active pest control and let our little workers do more.
Some of the best flowers to have in the garden for attracting beneficial insects are Brassicaceae family (cabbage, pok choi, rocket, cauliflower, Alyssum, etc.) and Umbelliferea family (carrots, fennel, celery, coriander, etc.). Their small size and easy access to nectar makes them ideal for the type of insects we like to have around.
Come round and see how these flowers and insects work for us and how they can work for you too.

Every so often we get to stand back and celebrate the bounty of the land we manage.
