Geraldton - The UTV Racing squad's attempt at carving out a little glory on the Australasian Safari went up in smoke here yesterday on the prologue for the 3 500 kilometre race. A tough few days for the team culminated when the car caught fire 11 kilometres into the prologue, and was completely destroyed. Driver Dwayne Voogt and co-driver Sidriaan de Villiers escaped with minor burns to their legs, and were discharged after treatment at a local hospital. "We were going well when the car backfired, and a few seconds later Sidriaan and I felt flames around the back of our legs," said Voogt. "By the time we were out of the car there was nothing we could do but stand around helplessly, and watch months of work and expense go up in flames." Team owner Stratford Voogt was in philosophical mood in the overnight bivouac where the burnt out UTV was a centre of attraction. "The main thing is that Dwayne and Sidriaan are okay," said Voogt. "We are going to go away and build another car. "The reception we have had before and after the fire from Safari officials and fellow competitors has beenunbelievable and we would like to come back and take care of unfinished business." The fire set the seal on a miserable week for UTV Racing. Earlier in the day the hired campervan carrying members of the team ran bearings outside Leeman, a town about 140 kilometres from Geraldton. Voogt senior took the decision that driver and co-driver, along with himself and two technical team members, would continue to Geraldton for the prologue. After a five hour wait for the remaining members of the team, the stricken camper was loaded on a flat bed and taken back to Perth. There was now a logistical problem with one service vehicle and two trailers. The trailer carrying tools and spares for the car was left at a caravan park in Leeman, before the remaining team members picked up the second trailer and headed for Geraldton. Earlier in the week one of the two UTV Racing entries was withdrawn, after a replacement could not be found in time for a faulty Engine Computer Unit (ECU). After crew had worked through the night on the car, a loose electrical wire then kept shorting out the fuel pump on the way to scrutineering. The problem was quickly solved, but it had turned into a trying couple of days for the team. "We haven't enjoyed much luck," said a rueful Voogt senior. "It has been hugely disappointing, but we will always remember the reception we got in Australia from the event organisers and fellow competitors. "We suspect the fire was the result of a malfunction in the fuel system filter, but we will have a closer look back in the workshop."
Hello all - another walkabout update. The UTV Racing team was given a late scare before the ceremonial start to the Australasian Safari at Wanneroo, about 30 kilometres from Perth, earlier today. On a short test run before final scrutineering the UTV Racing entry of Dwayne Voogt and Sidriaan de Villiers kept cutting out. The car was pushed through scrutineering, and it was later discovered a loose electrical wire kept shorting out the fuel pump. "Once we figured out the problem it took only a few minutes to sort it out," said team owner Stratford Voogt. "It gave us a bit of a scare, but all's well that ends well. "Now we are hoping for a clean run for Dwayne and Sidriaan over the next week." Today's ceremonial start will be followed by tomorrow's prologue at Geraldton, about 400 kilometres north of Perth. The prologue will decide start position for the first leg of the race on Sunday between Geraldton and Murchison. The week long race will cover a route of 3 500 kilometres in the Western Australia outback. An ominous message in the race booklet warns competitors to pack their sense of humour because the course has been designed to be "a true test of endurance and discipline."
Hello all - Another walkabout update. The UTV Racing challenge on the Australasian Safari, which gets underway tonight with a ceremonial start at the Wanneroo Showgrounds 30 kilometres from Perth, has been reduced to a single car. A decision was taken earlier today to withdraw the second UTV Racing entry, to be crewed by team owner Stratford Voogt and Chantel Bester, from the week-long 3 500 kilometre race. The remaining car will be in the hands of Voogt's son Dwayne and Sidriaan de Villiers. The second car ran into problems on Wednesday night when the Engine Computer Unit (ECU) on the 1,6 litre Toyota 20-valve engine failed. The problem was traced to a software failure. "We could not source a replacement ECU for the second car in time for the race, and I took the decision to withdraw the vehicle and put all our efforts behind Dwayne and Sidriaan," said Voogt senior. "It is very disappointing for Chantel, but she understands the situation." After the ceremonial start in Wanneroo competitors face a near 500 kilometre haul north to Geraldton for a prologue tomorrow evening. This will determine the start order for Sunday's first leg of the race to Murchison. Australia is a rather large continent/country and the route heads into some of the more remote parts of Western Australia. Communications are likely to be a bit of a problem, but we'll try and keep you posted on the UTV Racing progress with regular walkabout updates.
Hi all - Another walkabout update. The UTV Racing team took a bit of a body blow today when only one of the two cars entered for the Australasian Safari, which starts over the weekend, made it to scrutineering. The Mark 3 UTV to be driven by Dwayne Voogt and Sidriaan de Villiers made it through scrutineering with only a minor glitch. The second earlier model car, to be crewed by Stratford Voogt and Krugersdorp lass Chantel Bester, ran into an Engine Computer Unit (CPU) problem and never made it to scrutineering at the Wanneroo Showgrounds about 30 kilometres from Perth. Both cars, however, have been given until 3.30pm tomorrow (9.30am SA time) to make it through a final scrutineering check. The Voogt/de Villiers cars needs only a minor rear warning light adjustment, while the crew is hoping a replacement ECU for the Voogt/Bester car will arrived in time to be fitted. "We have sourced a replacement ECU," said team owner Stratford Voogt, "and are holding thumbs it will arrive in time for us to get the car ready for final scrutineering. "The work on the other car is minimal and we don't have any problems there." Bleary eyed technical crew worked through the night in an effort to have both cars ready for scrutineering. A software failure in the ECU was a major setback for the team, who were unable to sort out the problem themselves. "We were disappointed, but these things happen in racing and you have to live with it," said Voogt. "Hopefully it will all be smiles all round again tomorrow afternoon. The 3 500 kilometre event opens with a ceremonial start in Wanneroo tomorrow evening, with the prologue on Saturday in Geraldton, nearly 500 kilometres from Perth, and ends on September 27.
