Merike grew up in Dundee and decided to move back after completing her honors in Advanced Corporate Communication in 2022 at The North West University. She is passionate about languages, teaching and helping children reach their full potential.

Active aging is a term used to describe the maintenance of positive subjective well-being, good physical, social and mental health and continued involvement in one's family, peer group and community throughout the aging process.

Development of children is one of my biggest passions. It is something I spend most of my free time on researching and brainstorming on new ideas to develop the necessary skills of my own child and my patients.

In 2022 I started something new. I decided to share my passion in the form of baby and toddler stimulation groups once a week. I started out very causal and grew into an informative session for moms and their children about topics I find interesting and necessary for optimal development.
One topic that I really feel passionate about is the importance of play. Play is the most important daily task of a child.

Play offers a multisensory opportunity for a child to learn:

Multisensory learning, is using the neuroscience behind how we learn to teach lessons that engage two or more senses.

Most educators add audio or visual multimedia into their assignments, but multisensory learning also include tactile, smell, and taste-related materials. As long as the activity engages multiple areas of the brain, it can help students develop stronger memories around how to do it.

Worksheets are not multi-sensory. We only use vision and writing to complete a worksheet. Examples of multisensory learning is:

- Construction play: Using blocks, puzzles, clay, sand and mud to build and create.

- Social play: Talking, singing, listening to music, friends and teachers. Interaction and discussions about topics.

- Fantasy play: Imagining and crating fantasy ideas like being a teacher, doctor or farmer.

- Gross motor play: Climbing jumping swinging and running. Being wild and rough and tumble without too many restrictions.

- Educational play: Playing with educational toys and being part of structured play directed by an educator.

- Free play: Only supervision by an adult but no intervention to maximize imagination, learning opportunity and development.
