About the Session
“Best known as a “struggle’ photographer, it is political activism, and a desire to engage with society for economic justice, development and progressive social change which brought me to photography, and which continues to motivate, inform and direct the photographs I produce.

The struggle that takes centre place in my work is that of ‘ordinary’, or ‘marginal’ folk to survive in one of the harshest economic environments worldwide, defining the most inequitable society globally, unemployment and the social ills that accompany it. I am drawn to the majesty of the human spirit and how it rises to these challenges to overcome them.

Originating in rural KwaZulu-Natal, and continuing to reside there, it is issues pertaining to rural and country folk in particular that are at the core of those that I am driven to pursue.”

The Fine Art Department at the Wits School of Arts
Full time Lecturer position, with expertise in: interdisciplinary approaches to studio practice and contemporary media; critical art theory, discourses and histories among other areas. The role would include an active contribution to critical debates that shape the working of an art school within a broader socio- political, ecological and economic context.
