Happy New Year’s Eve from the FBI! This photo from one of our own inspires us to reflect on the end of 2019 and the beginning of a new year. An FBI special agent took the picture while on a camping trip in Alaska and the photo was the winner of the 2015 Anchorage Field Office Photo Competition. We’re glad the cold didn’t bother him enough to miss this memorable moment. Read the story behind the picture in the agent’s own words:

"As memory serves, I took this on the spring equinox several years back. I had intended to capture the full moon rising over the Chugach Mountains, and summited Mount Baldy earlier in the day to set up camp. Mount Baldy is a popular hike in the Eagle River area, and a place I frequently visit—though this would be my first winter overnight there.

I made dinner after I set up camp and watched the sun set over Anchorage and the Cook Inlet. Despite the cold, I didn’t put the outer shell on the tent, so I could see the stars. Later that night, I was woken to the sound of coyotes. Coyotes aren’t the best way to wake up, but the sight of the Northern Lights overhead gobsmacked me. I must’ve lain there for an hour and watched them dance overhead before deciding to grab some frames.

The perspective of the photo is generally N NE, from Mount Baldy to Black Tail Rocks. Eagle River and Anchorage are behind me. The glow from the tent is my headlamp.

Since then, I've spent many nights up on the peaks and ridges around Eagle River, in all seasons, but none treated me to a show quite like this."
