THE CONSEQUENCES OF BODY STRESS
When the point of overload is reached, stress may become “locked” into the body and manifests as lines of tension. When tension becomes stored in a physical structure, the tissue is compressed, causing irritation of nerves. Internal organs may stop functioning optimally as a result of disrupted nerve pathways, which may result in discomfort, pain, illness, medical conditions or continuously feeling listless and tired. Body stress in the spine has the most far-reaching effects, as each spinal nerve supplies a large area of the body, both on the surface and internally.

The nervous system is a highly sophisticated network of nerves and cells, made up of the brain, spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, which relay information to all parts of the body.
When body stress becomes stored in the back or neck, the compression effect may have an impact on these nerve pathways, disrupting communication and undermining the body's efficiency.
As a result, we may start to feel pain, stiffness, fatigue or numbness; the effects may vary, but when the nervous system is disrupted one may begin to experience a decline in overall health.

What is Body Stress? Stress overload on our bodies may cause tension to become locked into the body’s physical structures. This stored tension is known as ‘body stress’.
It’s good to see the good, but when you cannot see it, remember to be it too!

Emotional stress may take the form of short-lived, violent feelings, like anger or sudden shock. Or we may undergo milder but ongoing mental strain, such as constant anxiety, depression, boredom or resentment.
Most people do not realize that our thoughts can have a powerful impact on the body. At times we may be aware of how we are reacting physically to emotional stress. For instance, when driving in heavy traffic, you may notice how you hunch your shoulders and tighten your neck muscles in a defensive posture while gripping the steering wheel. When faced with a confrontation with someone, you experience 'butterflies in the stomach' and tense your abdominal muscles. When angry, you may find yourself tightening your jaw and clenching your fists.
Science has confirmed that the mind-body connection is a Physical reality - emotions have an impact on our biochemistry. In time the emotions become locked into the physical structures as body stress, resulting in constriction of the life energy flow.
Not all stress is bad. A certain amount of stress can actually be beneficial. As Gail Meggersee herself says in her book ‘Self-healing with Body Stress Release’:
When we manage to adapt to a stress factor (stressor), the stress is not cumulative. It is dealt with and dissipated from the body and mind. There is no 'hangover' from beneficial stress. Every time we face a challenge and overcome it, we have made a successful adaptation, which then moves us to a higher level of capability. In this way stress is our means to evolve ourselves, in facets of our lives.
BSR practitioners regard themselves as health practitioners, not healers. Only the wisdom of the body should be regarded as the healer. With this understanding, we see all forms of health-care as catalysts in the healing process, and remain in awe of the body’s miraculous ability to heal and regenerate itself. In BSR we do not claim to treat or cure anything. As BSR is aimed at enhancing the body’s self -healing capacity, it works very well alongside medical treatment or other forms of health-care. A medical doctor who was a guest speaker at a BSR conference expressed his admiration for the principles and effects of BSR. He concluded his lecture with this advice to practitioners, ‘Stay amazed at the power in your hands – and don’t get cocky!’
