On 3 July 2024, Dundee witnessed an inspiring event as the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy celebrated its graduation ceremony. The event highlighted the remarkable achievements and promising futures of the new graduates.

Wilmé Verwoerd-Witbooi from the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy outlined the next steps for the graduates, encouraging them to connect with a Superhost Ambassador and strive for their first 5-star reviews. She also extended an invitation for graduates to become facilitators, helping to expand the Airbnb Academy across other African countries. "Connecting with a Superhost Ambassador can provide invaluable insights and guidance," Wilme stated. "We want our graduates to aim high."

Samora Nqweniso, the Acting GM for Tourism Development at KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority delivered an insightful presentation, encouraging the graduates to join their local Community Tourism Organization (CTO) and contribute to reviewing the CTO strategy in the province. The presentation emphasized the importance of participating in various programs and becoming a formal part of the tourism industry. He further stated that this initiative will help better position the homestays in the market and identify opportunities for young people in local communities. "Ensuring our properties meet high standards is essential," the spokesperson added. "We are committed to providing ongoing support to help these homestays thrive."

The ceremony featured heartfelt speeches from graduates Cebisile Hlongwana and Nokukhanya Sibiya, who shared their personal journeys and aspirations. Their stories underscored the transformative impact of the Airbnb Entrepreneurship Academy on their lives and careers.

Zamani Khumalo, a 2019 graduate and Airbnb Superhost, also spoke at the event. She inspired attendees with her story of mentoring the Dundee group, highlighting the importance of community and shared success. "Mentoring the new graduates has been a rewarding experience," Zamani shared. "Seeing their growth and enthusiasm reminds me of my own journey and the support I received."

This graduation marks a significant shift in the tourism landscape, moving the focus from big businesses to the growing group of formalized homestays in Dundee. With better market positioning and continued support, these homestays are poised to thrive, contributing to the local economy and offering authentic experiences to visitors.

Congratulations to all the graduates! The future of tourism in Dundee looks bright with your innovation and dedication. We look forward to seeing your continued growth and success in the tourism industry.

With the money that I received from the project, I was able to send my kids to school with brand new school uniforms.

Thank to IDC for when we go to town, we now have beautiful bus and taxi stops where we can sit and wait for our taxis.

All of these that were built through the IDC SEF project by our very own villagers as General workers."

My name is Siphesihle Nobhucela from Matheko village. I’m employed in the IDC SEF Project under the theme Gender Based Violence.

Through GBV we managed to visits our community schools and did
door-to-door to teach our communities about GBV. GBV showed me that my community does suffer from GBV, people are being abused out there and because they have no one to talk to, it becomes hard for them to be strong.

We also found that GBV in schools - children are suffering. We taught them how they should handle the issue and from which bodies should they seek help.

Thank you so much to IDC for bringing us this wonderful project for now I have also learned other skills from the other themes. For example, the Community & Public Art team showed me that you can mix different paints to get the color paint that you are looking for.

With the money I receive from the project I can support my family and my kids, thank you so much to IDC"

We have been to schools, churches and many other areas in our community where we taught them about healthy and safe living.

Under the GBV theme, we found that even men are abused, which was something we only used to find in towns.

Thank so much to IDC for bringing us job opportunities and adding hope to our village.

Africa!Ignite conducted Enterprise Development Training in Nukukamma in Addo, in the Eastern Cape.

The primary goal of the enterprise development program is to upskill students in order to stimulate economic activity and bring about positive social change. 16 young students from the Nukukamma Hospitality School received ED skills training from Antoinette Van Niekerk and Dr Niki Glen.

The Nukukamma Hospitality School is a cutting-edge institution catering to the demands of the travel industry. The program will serve as a center for training in tourism and hospitality as well as the development of new businesses.

To help students develop entrepreneurial mindsets and provide guidance on various aspects of entrepreneurship, the Enterprise Development Training aimed to both stimulate the students and enhance their skills and increase their chances of success.

The ED training encourages young people to be creative in a way that will secure their future, thereby contributing to economic development, solving problems, creating jobs, and accessing opportunities. This helps people become independent and channel their creativity into creating something of their own in this competitive world.

Very appealing! The Community and Public Art initiative under the IDC Social Employment Fund Project, spearheaded by Africa!Ignite in collaboration with Zutari and Wild Coast Foods, is truly vibrant!

This artistic endeavour not only enhances public spaces throughout the villages but also fosters skills development among the artists, who receive guidance from external artists and designers. Moreover, it elevates the visibility of local artists, landscapers, and other artisans in the villages, fostering a sense of local pride.

Harvest time! The coordination of the Food Security programme would ensure that any excess vegetables that are produced are sold within the local area.

The Food Security Theme managed by Wild Coast Foods identified, trained and is supporting 370 local beneficiaries (participants) in establishing and maintaining household food gardens. Each participant was provided with a VegePak with 5 crops that can be planted all year round. The goal is to grow a variety 5 nutritious vegetables that will feed families in need on a daily basis for 1 year and also possibly be sold to bring income into the home. The programme's 370 home gardens have a multiplier effect and will in fact benefit a further 1 850 people.

Welcome to Africa!Ignite

Our vision is a self-reliant Africa alight with energy and innovation.
Our purpose is to create partnerships with rural and marginalised communities to facilitate their fair participation in the economy and society, and to help make their voices heard.

Africa!Ignite was established in 2004 by MiET Africa, a leading Southern African education development agency based in KwaZulu-Natal; to pursue community development work complementary to MiET Africa’s focus on schools and formal education.

Africa!Ignite’s access to a unique footprint of 120 development nodes across KwaZulu-Natal and our team’s extensive experience of working in rural areas over more than a decade have helped us to establish leadership in rural development.

We provide extensive enterprise-development support to hundreds of youths and adults; particularly women, across KwaZulu-Natal’s rural areas. We support:

•Rural crafters (about 1 000, mostly women of whom the majority are mothers and grandmothers),
•Rural research field workers (about 40),
•Newspaper correspondents and story-tellers (20),
•Water and sanitation outreach workers (120) and local historians/tour guides,
•Rural retail entrepreneurs and tourist guides

Africa!Ignite has paid more than R16 million to rural entrepreneurs since 2008, and in the past two years paid R2 million to rural women crafters.

We also have extensive experience in communication and creative story-telling. We help communities, adults and children to tell their own stories and showcase these stories through different creative media.

Some clear development principles underpin our work:
•We believe in genuine partnerships. We value the funding, investment and support partners who enable us to achieve our purpose; as well as our rural beneficiary partners who welcome us into their communities and who partner with us in igniting potential. We seek to nurture all these partnerships.

•We believe in the people of our continent, our country and our province. Our aim is to help them to reach their potential, so that they can ignite the continent’s energy, creativity and economic power.

•We do not believe in handouts. We salute those agencies who help those who cannot help themselves. Our purpose; however, is to create opportunities and remove obstacles for individuals and groups in rural and marginalised areas who have the will and the drive to help themselves and their communities.
