Stiff joints, reduced flexibility and arthritis could prevent you from moving and playing like you once did. However, it doesn't mean you have to stop playing altogether. Here are some safe sports to consider including in your daily life:

🏊‍♀️ Swimming - this is one of the most recommended workouts for all stages of life. It’s easy on the joints, yet still gives a great full-body exercise.
⛳ Golfing - If you walk all 18 holes, you put in about 8kms. Golf is a moderate form of exercise with a range of health benefits, both physical and mental.
🎾 Tennis - Both an aerobic and an anaerobic exercise, tennis builds leg strength and improves coordination, agility and balance. Tennis remains good for your heart, coordination, balance and flexibility.

Movement is good for your body, and gives you the opportunity to express your competitive nature!

Rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, KwaZulu-Natal has so much for residents and visitors to explore. Step into Zulu heritage with some of today’s traditional Zulu dishes. Whether it’s phutu (mielie meal), uJeqe (steamed bread), amaDombolo (dumplings cooked in a stew) or imFino (wild spinach), Zulu cuisine offers something for carnivores and veggie lovers alike.

As a melting pot of cultures, many British favourites can also be seen on the menus of South African restaurants. Our breakfast dishes like eggs, fried mushrooms, tomato, baked beans and toast, come from British influence.

Outside of the sub-continent of India, Durban has the largest diaspora of Indian people in the world. Our Durban curry has some of its own quirks and creations which include banana with milk (served as a side with curry) and Bunny Chow.

Having a strong body helps you avoid injuries, falls, and pain. The triceps particularly, work hard every time you do any kind of pushing movement.

Try some of these exercises to keep both arms strong and balanced:

- Sit or stand, holding a medicine ball or a weight in both hands.
- Take the weight straight up overhead, with your arms straight and next to the ears.
- Slowly bend your elbows, taking the weight back behind the head until your elbows are at about a 90-degree angle.
- Squeeze the arms to pull the weight back to start without locking the elbows.
- Do 12 reps, keeping the back straight and the abs in.

Stay tuned for more easy exercises you can incorporate into your daily routine! 💪

The 95th Comrades Marathon is currently in progress! Let’s take a moment to pay tribute to the race’s oldest finisher, local legend Wally Hayward. During his 60-year running career, he won the Comrades five times (including on his first attempt), represented South Africa at the Olympics, and broke multiple long-distance running records. He ran his final Comrades Marathon at the age of 80 in 1989, and to this day remains the oldest finisher in the history of the race.

Good luck to all the runners today!

"Grandparents are special people
with wisdom and pride.
They are always offering love and kindness
and are always there to guide.
They often make you feel so confident
and strong.

Their arms are always open
no matter what you did wrong.
They try to help out in every way
that they can.

They love all their grandchildren the same
whether you're a child, woman or man.
They are always there to listen
and to lend a helping hand.
They show you respect
and they try to understand.
They give their love, devotion and so much more,
that's easy to see.

Grandparents, what perfect examples
of the kind of person that we should be."

A delicious soup is perfect for these chilly winter days, but sometimes we need something more. A cup of soup with our favourite side dish can be the ultimate comfort food.

A cheesy, toasted garlic bread is one of our favourite side dish pairings. Snow peas stir-fried adds a tasty vegetable addition to soup. As well as a warm spinach salad, is the ideal light and healthy side dish to accompany hearty soups. Nothing beats a gooey, mouth - watering grilled cheese sandwich which is a must have side dish.

Tell us about your favourite side dishes to serve with your soup!

Even if a warm bowl of soup is ideal on these chilly winter days, there are occasions when we want more. Your favourite side dish and a cup of soup can be the best comfort food. A cheesy, toasted garlic bread paired with tomato soup or a warm spinach salad also makes a delicious light side dish for hearty soups, but there is no better side dish than a goopy, mouthwatering grilled cheese sandwich.

Our daily activities induce our shoulders to curve towards the front of our bodies. Shoulder rolls will help improve your shoulder mobility.

Stand tall. Raise your arms in front of you to shoulder level, palms facing each other. Raise your arms higher with each repetition as your shoulders allow. Look up to the ceiling as your hands drift high to give movement to your neck. Repeat.

Feeling chilly this winter? Here are some fun ways to keep yourself warm.

Give your old sweaters a new lease on life! Instead of tossing out old cable knit, up-cycle it to make charming leg warmers and hand warmers.

Warm your pyjamas by wrapping them over a hot water bottle 30 minutes before going to bed. That way, when you put them on, they will be nice and toasty for a cosy night's sleep!

Create your own homemade heating pads. Do you have extra socks lying around in your drawer? Fill it with uncooked rice, close the opening with a ribbon, and microwave it for 2 -3 minutes and you have a heating pad! If you want to go all out, add some lavender to the rice.

Looking to improve your coordination and balance? These co-ordination exercises can be a little tricky at first, but when performing different actions with both sides of your body, you get better results.

Heel Lifts with Arm Lifts:

1. Stand tall. Lift your heels slowly and roll up on the balls of your feet. Begin with a slight lift and gently increase the height of your heels. Return your heels to the floor slowly.

2. Combine heel lifts and side arm lifts, lifting arms to shoulder level and rotating palms towards the ceiling as you lift the heels. As your heels return to the floor, slowly lower your arms to your sides.

3. Switch to front arm lifts. Raise your heels and arms to about shoulder level, palms facing each other. Lower your heels and bring your arms back to your sides, palms facing your body.

Got it? Now repeat this set over again.

Your age shouldn't stop you from spending time in the wilderness. We all need to get outdoors once in a while and engage in an activity that isn't too hard on our bodies.

Try some of these tips that can be easily used on your next hike:

✔ Bring essential gear - be sure to pack things like weather-ready clothing, water bottle, food, bug spray, sunscreen, etc.
✔ Dress appropriately - always choose something durable, breathable, and light; KZN weather can often change so make sure to pack an extra jacket or jersey.
✔ Take plenty of breaks - hiking is not a race, so ensure that you hike at your own pace. Your body will need time to recover so sit down from time to time and enjoy the scenery.

Make every moment count!
