College Street Primary School
Email: [email protected] As of 2017, we are officially a special school. We cater for children whose primary diagnosis is ASD.
๐ Home Affairs ๐
Last week, 12 of our learners successfully applied for their IDs, thanks to the Home Affairs mobile unit!
This was especially meaningful for our ASD learners, who often experience sensory challenges in crowded spaces. By providing a calm and supportive environment, we helped make this important milestone a less stressful experience.
Now, our learners are ready for the future โ from voting in the next elections to opening bank accounts and applying for jobs. A big step towards independence!
๐ All Aboard the phase R and 2 outing train ๐
This past Friday, 16th August, was a day of smiles, sunshine, and the sweet sound of miniature trains chugging along! Our delightful Phase Rs and Phase 2s embarked on a joint excursion to the East London Model Engineering Society, where they were greeted by the world of model trains.
The air was filled with laughter and excitement as our little adventurers hopped on for a whimsical ride through the scenic outdoors. It was more than just a train outing; it was a journey into the heart of childhood wonder.
Choo-choo-choose to share in our fun and maybe plan your own miniature train adventure soon!

โจ Nelson Mandela Day โจ
In honor of Nelson Mandela Day, College Street School Nahoon collected non-perishable food items to be donated to Geraldine's Child and Youth Multipurpose Centre. Geraldine and her team are doing inspiring and much-needed work for the community. Read about her story below, and please consider providing support if you have the capacity to do so.
โGeraldines child and youth multi-purpose centre is a non-profitable organization situated in the Pefferville community. Our vision and mission are to promote and uphold children's rights and to act in the best interest of our sick and senior citizens. We interact with our clients on a personal level, keeping in mind their basic needs.
Working from home can be hectic, especially considering the privacy and confidentiality of our clients. Majority of the clients come to my home traumatized and in need of any kind of assistance- especially during the December holidays. We are our busiest during this period, due to alcohol and drug related domestic violence, violence, and child abuse.โ
Their request: โwe humbly ask for a secondhand container or wendy-house, to use as our office space. This will also enable us to work holistically in a more professional manner. We adopted a piece of land from the Buffalo City Municipality, with the hope of having a structured office facility in the container or wendy-house. Our goal is also to empower our unemployed youth with skills training and youth programs. We would also like to have support groups for our senior citizens because most feel neglected and/or abandoned as most of their immediate family members are faced with their own challenges.
Poverty is undeniably real and a massive challenge in our community. Therefore, we also run a feeding scheme with donations we receive from our โonline friends and familyโ. This feeding scheme will eventually also run more effectively if conducted from the structured facility.
We will highly appreciate any donations from you to make this dream a reality.
Kind regards,
Geraldine Ruitersโ

โจ Nelson Mandela Day โจ
In celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, our learners actively participated in meaningful activities to give back to the community and deepen their understanding of this important day.
Our Phase 6 learners showed their compassion by making and delivering care packages to the residents of DJ Sobey Old Age Home. We cherish our ongoing relationship with the old age home and appreciate their warm welcome. Teaching our learners about the sense of community and giving back, even if itโs through volunteering time, is a vital lesson.
The learners took great pride in packing, stapling, and labeling the bags themselves, an exercise that aligns with the working skills they need for their future work endeavours. A big thank you to our sponsors, DR Consulting Solutions and Amatola Irrigation, for their support.
Meanwhile, our Phase 4 learners engaged in educational activities, exploring the history of apartheid, Robben Island, and the true significance of July 18th.
Mandela Day provided a fantastic opportunity for an important history lesson and to understand why we dedicate 67 minutes in honor of Mandela.
Let's continue to honor Nelson Mandela's legacy through acts of kindness and education! ๐โค๏ธ

We would like to extend a warm welcome to the newest member of the College Street family- Ceyrah Adams born on the 11th of July.

Following their presentations yesterday, we are excited to announce that they have progressed to the next stage, which is scheduled in 2 weeks. The upcoming rounds include cluster, provincial, and then national levels.

๐ A Big Thank You to Mercedes Benz Assembly Division! ๐
We are filled with gratitude here at College Street School Nahoon as we reflect on the incredible visit we had from Mercedes Benz Assembly Division during Autism Awareness Month. Their presence and the time they generously spent with our learners were truly heartwarming and made an impact on our school community.
Their support and understanding of the importance of inclusion and awareness for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is commendable. It's partnerships like these that remind us of the power of collaboration in making a positive difference in our society.
Thank you for being part of our journey and for helping us create a brighter, more inclusive world for our learners. ๐
Just finished applying for my visa today! On this date in 3 months time, we will be arriving in London. Time is flying. Don't forget to check out back a buddy - follow the QR code on your phone.
๐ Thank you : Craft and Co ๐
We are happy to share that Morgan and Leone Hunter, a wonderful mother-daughter team, created beautiful shirts for our school this April.
A total of 121 shirts were ordered, and their company, Craft and Co, generously donated a portion made from each shirt back to our school. Thanks to their efforts, we raised funds for the school and brought much-needed awareness to our cause.
College Street extends heartfelt thanks to Craft and Co for their exceptional service and generosity. We look forward to working with you again in the future!
๐งก Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness at College Street School Nahoon ๐งก
Today, College Street School Nahoon came together to raise awareness for Prader-Willi Syndrome!
Our learners and teachers wore orange and took part in special activities to celebrate and spread awareness for this important cause. It was such a wonderful day!
๐งก Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness ๐งก
Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a complex developmental disability resulting from a chromosomal defect. It affects the hypothalamus, leading to issues like uncontrollable hunger, cognitive impairment, and challenging behaviors. Children with PWS may need fewer calories yet possess unique skills like good memory and fine motor abilities.
Key professionals involved may include dieticians, geneticists, therapists, and more. It's crucial to understand and support children's learning disabilities, dietary needs, emotional difficulties, and behaviors like repeated questioning. Providing structured environments, clear guidelines, and positive reinforcement can enhance their well-being.
It's essential to be aware of triggers that worsen behaviors and embrace positive approaches to foster a supportive atmosphere. Establishing consistent routines, offering personalized support, and promoting independence while ensuring safety are vital.
Lastly, being attentive to medical concerns and collaborating closely with parents can significantly benefit children with PWS.

๐ณ๏ธ Voting at College Street School Nahoon ๐ณ๏ธ
Yesterday, we held our very own elections, and it was a fantastic experience for everyone involved! Each learner proudly presented their "ID CARD" before voting, ensuring their name was crossed off the list. They received their ballot, made their choice, had their thumbs marked, and placed their vote in the ballot box.
The parties they could vote for were:
Staff to wear school uniform
Longer break on Friday
An art exhibition
Funky hair to school
The votes will be counted, and the results will be announced soon. This was an outstanding learning opportunity for our learners to understand how the upcoming elections work.
Well done to all involved! The learners thoroughly enjoyed it, and it was such a lovely learning experience. ๐๐ณ๏ธ๐

๐ข Attention all schools & sports clubs! ๐ข
We need your help!
We're on the lookout for old high jump mats and ruck/tackle bags that may no longer be in use or available for donation. These items are crucial for our therapy room, but they often come with a hefty price tag. That's why we're reaching out to our community for support.
If you have any of these items lying around or know someone who might, please consider donating them to us. Your generosity will directly impact the well-being of those learners who rely on our therapy services.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need more information. Together, we can make a difference!
Thank you in advance for your support!

๐งโ๐ณ Master Chef ๐งโ๐ณ
To add some flavor to an otherwise quiet day at College Street School Nahoon, it was decided to have an IMPROMPTU Master Chef competition to put the culinary skills of our teachers and learners to the test!
Our very own Gordan Ramsey inspired judges took their jobs very seriously, and ensured that no sweet treat creation was left untasted!
After a rigorous judging process, it was decided that the โRocky Road Ballsโ were the winners, with โThe Hungry Caterpillarโ
coming in as a very close second.
