7 things that can affect your crossbow accuracy

🏹 The Wrong Arrows

To maximize accuracy, you should only use arrows recommended by the manufacturer for a specific crossbow.

You may have read that lighter arrows fly faster. While this is true, faster does not mean better. Light arrows can put unnecessary stress on the bow and could void your warranty.

🏹 A Bow That Doesn’t Fit

Bows are not one size fits all! Only you will know if a bow is comfortable, however. If it feels too heavy, too wide, or longer, it is not a suitable crossbow for you. While you can technically use any crossbow, you will be far more accurate with one that fits.

Comfort always trumps weight and size for deadly precision.

🏹 Loose-Fitting Components

Crossbows are very finicky. It doesn't take much to shake them loose. moreover, they vibrate when in use and that can loosen the components further. No matter how good of a shot you are, a loose bolt will weaken your accuracy and could cause you to lose a trophy.

🏹 The Right Scope

A crosshairs scope with proper scope mounting will improve your accuracy significantly.

🏹 Not Knowing Your Range

Learning how far away an animal is only by sight is a skill that can ad should be refined by any crossbow hunter. The further away an animal is, the more difficult it is to be accurate of course. But it also helps you choose the correct cross hair.

🏹 Funky tuning
This can be fixed with fresh bowstrings and ensuring that each limb is the same distance from the prob to the back of the string. it is so important that the limbs are level. If the left limb is lower than the right, the bow will shoot left. If the right limb is lower than the left, it will shoot right; in either case, it will shoot high or low, depending on the range.

Did you like these tips? Do you have any more Crossbow tips that have helped you significantly improve your accuracy?

Ten gun Safety Tips Everyone Should Know But Doesn't

πŸ”« Keep Your Gun Unloaded When Not In Use

Shooting should only ever be intentional. Do not leave room for a mishap.

πŸ”« Handle Misfires Properly

If your weapon misfires, don’t confront the issue immediately. Keep your weapon aimed at the target briefly to ensure the problem isn’t a delayed fire. Once you’ve waited, carefully remove the faulty ammunition and check it for signs of malfunction. Ensure your barrel is clear after the misfire too. Once again - DON'T POINT IT AT YOUR FACE!

πŸ”« Always Handle Your Gun As If It Is Loaded

Even if you have a perfect track record for unloading your firearm before putting it away, always assume it is loaded. Please don't rely on your gun's safety feature; still use it consistently.

πŸ”« Only Point Your Gun At What You Want To Shoot

Otherwise, aim it toward the ground.

πŸ”« Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Unless Firing

If your finger is on the trigger and you get startled, your finger will squeeze, and you will fire.

πŸ”« Make Sure The Barrel Is Free From Obstructions and debris

β€Ό DO NOT DO THIS BY PEEPING DOWN THE BARREL! You should also clean your gun after every use.

πŸ”« Know What You’re Aiming At So you know where the bullet will go.

(Obviously, also so that you don't hurt someone) but we mean that you should be aware that if you're shooting at something like metal, it may deflect and veer off in another direction.

πŸ”« Wear Eye and Ear Protection

Especially if you shoot regularly.

πŸ”« Get to know your gun intimately

Be aware of its limitations and where it is most likely to malfunction.

πŸ”« Only Fire the Ammunition Your Gun is Built to Handle

Not all ammunition is interchangeable. You could cause a malfunction, hurt someone, or damage your weapon.

Are there any safety tips that you would add to the list? Let's make this thread as valuable as possible.

The most worthy adversary you'll face. The Cape Buffalo is considered the most dangerous of the Big 5 due to its size and cunning. The thrill of the hunt is unmatchable, and these unpredictable and powerful creatures are highly sought after.

Not without its risk, this animal is responsible for more hunter deaths than any other animal.

Your skill will be tested on this hardy animal, and you will be left with a sizeable trophy because we only hunt large older bulls who are done breeding.

We do not leave anything to chance, and I will be beside you to guide and advise the shot placement and follow through to ensure a safe and effective hunt as possible.

Top recommendation for bow hunting in South Africa from the pros

It's the Sable!

Sable are the living embodiment of the difference hunting makes in conservation. Just five years ago, this animal was on the endangered animal list. Now, due to concentrated efforts from the hunting industry and purposeful breeding by farmers, they are back to respectable numbers.

These elegant creatures are perfect for bow hunting.

They majestically roam the bush but are quick to react so you have to keep your wits about you and keep your cool.

Probably one of the most crafty animals on the planet. We want to introduce the ultra-intelligent and fearless Honey badger. They have been known to take on lions and even buffalo when threatened. They like to snack on snakes and have higher immunity to snake bites, scorpion stings and even bee stings. Probably because these brave guys are always brimming with adrenaline πŸ˜‚ but that is just speculation, don't quote me on the adrenalin thing.

They get their name because they often infiltrate hives to get the honey. They find the hives by following birds. It is a symbiotic relationship in which the bird will show the badger the hive, and the badger will compensate the bird with a piece or two of honeycomb. Their main diet consists of snakes, scorpions and rodents, though. Honey is just a sweetener πŸ˜‰

These guys have floods of stamina. They jog more than walk and can chase their prey until it falls exhausted to the ground.

They are mainly nocturnal. However, in the winter, they mostly seek shelter from the cold evenings and are active at dawn and dusk. Being opportunistic creatures, they are sometimes found busy during the day if their focus has been grabbed by prey or opponent.

Honey Badgers are often hunting trip sweeteners, showing up while you wait for your main trophy and presenting an opportunity. They make beautiful full mounts and weigh around 12 kg.

I recommend checking out some honey Badger high jinks on YouTube if you have time today. They are incredible to watch. They are known for being master escape artists in zoos and parks. Able to break out of even the toughest enclosures. Using logs as ramps and squishing their bodies through tiny spaces.

Crocodylus niloticus, the dinosaurs that made it! 🐊 That's why they smile so wide.

The ones we have in Southern Africa are still, in fact, under the genus Nile Crocodile, even though they don't hang out in the Nile.

Hold on to your hats because these creatures are awesome, and I could honestly write a 10-page essay on how awesome and fierce they are.

An adult croc can weigh up to 1000kg. Crocs are meat eaters. Feasting on whatever creature is unfortunate enough to head for a drink within chomping distance. Mostly antelope, big cats, and buffalo. They are also known to eat hippos and fish, and in some unfortunate cases, humans.

They will grab their prey with their powerful jaws, a force of more than 5,000 pounds per square inch, and they swim to deeper waters to do what is called a death roll, where they tumble around until the prey is fully submitted. After that, they will leave the prey in the water to soften the meat before consuming it. Helpful to other crocodiles, they have been observed to hold a carcass still while another one takes a bite. How accommodating, right? The dominant crocodile always eats first, though. Kind of like lions.

You may have seen crocodile hunters jumping on the backs of crocodiles and holding the jaws shut and thought "HOW?!" that's because their jaws are more geared towards closing and are surprisingly weak at opening.

On a lighter note. Their quirkiness knows no bounds. If we observe the breeding habits of crocodiles, it's hard not to giggle. When a croc feels particularly randy😍, it will blow bubbles in the water, sending vibrating signals to nearby mates that they are in the mood. πŸ˜‰

Females will lay around 40 eggs in a burrow. If you walk along the banks of a river, you can sometimes hear a distinct call from the babies. That is how they signal mom to come and fetch them. The mother crocodile sporting a jaw that could crush through even the mightiest jaw breaker, will gently carry her young to the water. If you do hear their calls, rest assured that mom is near. She cools off in the water but regularly returns to the nest to protect her eggs from predators.

The gender of crocodiles is dependent on the ambient temperature around the 3rd week of gestation. Eggs on the outside of the hutch that are more exposed to the elements will typically be female, while where it is warmer and more consistent, more males will form.

They have no natural predators and can live up to 80 years in captivity but generally live to around 45.

This trophy is recommended for a skilled hunter. If your shot isn't placed very well, you could be in danger because of the distance required for a good shot, and if you don't have time to produce a lethal shot, the crocodile will disappear into the depths, and the trophy may be lost. Sneaking up on a trophy crocodile is a lot more challenging and exciting than many hunters realize.

Are you planning a hunt in South Africa? There are some things you should know to ensure a legal and ethical hunt:

πŸ—‘ Prohibited methods and weapons:
β€’ Poison or fire;
β€’ Any trap;
β€’ A fire-arm which discharges a rim-fire cartridge of a calibre less than 5,6 mm, like a .22 rifle;
β€’ A fi re-arm of a calibre less than 6,5 mm (.256 inch) may not be used for hunting red hartebeest, gemsbok, blue and black wildebeest, kudu, and buffalo;
β€’ A fire-arm that fi res more than two shots without it having to be manually reloaded;
β€’ A set gun; and
β€’ A device which injects an intoxicating or a narcotic agent or poison into an animal.

🐢 Prohibited hunting means
β€’ Dogs;
β€’ Boats for chasing or killing birds in or on inland waters;
β€’ Artificial lighting; and
β€’ Motor vehicles or aeroplanes.

⌚ Prohibited locations and times:
β€’ You may not hunt at night, from one hour after sundown until one hour before sunrise, because the light is so poor that you can only shoot unselectively. In such conditions, you will not be able to see when you are aiming at a pregnant female, for example; and
β€’ You may not hunt on or alongside a public road, or use a weapon in a public place within the boundaries of an urban area, as this constitutes a danger to other people.

🐐 A few exceptions to these rules:
β€’ Dogs may be used for hunting birds during the hunting season and for following and searching for wounded animals;
β€’ A fire-arm that fires a cartridge of 5,6 mm (e.g. a .22 rifle) may be used for hunting any bird in its hunting season or for hunting any unprotected wild animal; and
β€’ Landowners may use a vehicle for hunting on their land.

Have you met Kobus🀠?

Kobus ellipsiprymnus, to be precise. Or maybe you know him by his other name, the Waterbuck.

How much do you know about the Waterbuck?

They have shaggy hairs under their throats, and the rest of their body is covered in rough hair. They look sort of tumble dried πŸ˜‚ with a notable light circle around their derriere (you know, the bum section). People often say they were the first to use the loo on Noah's ark, and the paint was still wet. The head-and-body length is typically between 177 and 235 cm (70 and 93 in), and the typical height is between 120 and 136 cm (47 and 54 in). The males have impressive back-sweeping horns.

Dominant bulls occupy territories that they defend by aggressive posturing and even fights. Cows, calves and young bachelors congregate in herds of up to 30 members. The composition of these herds can vary daily as individuals freely leave or join these.

about Waterbuck - they are fantastic swimmers! If they feel threatened, they will not hesitate to jump into the water ad retreat to deep waters to avoid predators. Their name makes sense now, right? While they are not by any means amphibious, they do prefer to live near water.

If you were curious about hunting this animal for meatπŸ₯©, here are the facts:

Unlike their distant cousins, the Kudu. They are not very tasty. Older waterbuck fresh meats smell awful due to their matured sweat glands.
They are safe to eat, despite the folklore that their meat is inedible.
They are hunted more for their hides and their horns.

This begs the question, would you still hunt it despite it not being a very appetizing buck to eat? Let us know!

The common warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is a wild member of the pig familyπŸ—. We will be focusing on the Southern warthog, because those are the pigs that call South Africa home. These are the species you are most likely to come across, if you find them at their best, they will be wallowing in a shallow pool of mud.

With a head-and-body length ranging from 0.9 to 1.5 metres. Females weigh 45 to 75 kilograms and males range between 60 to 150 kg. if the size isn't enough to help you differentiate the sexes, male warthogs have a set of warts just below their eyes that protrude quite prominently.

A warthog is identifiable by the two pairs of tusks protruding from the mouth and curving upwards. The lower pair, which is far shorter than the upper pair, becomes razor-sharp by rubbing against the upper pair every time the mouth is opened and closed. Their tails are long and end with a tuft of hair.

If you've watched the Lion king, you may remember Pumba feasting on grubs and bugs, but warthogs actually prefer vegetation. They feed on shoots and roots, often with their front legs kneeling down. A very endearing trait of theirs. They actually have many endearing traits. They run with their tail straight up in the air, making them look quite proud.

As one of the Top 5 animals to hunt in South Africa, they make for a great hunt any time of year. The most challenging part of nabbing a hog is that if you are hesitant and nick them, they may dart into a hole and it can be a real nightmare to dig them out. Note that they have poor eyesight, but they have sensitive ears and a very fine-tuned 🐽 - so keep the wind in mind.

Add one of these to your next plains game excursion.
