17 February 2024 & 2 March 2024
Mark Making Through Motion

On 17 February 2024 and 2 March 2024, SCAVA’s own Hein Botha presented a workshop comprising of two successive modules at the George Museum. While professional dancer Lynette Du Plessis created swirls of grace and contorted herself into haunting poses, artists were invited to challenge perception and shed restriction by loosening their hands, inspiring a sense of flow and playfulness. Both modules dared artists to challenge their own beliefs of art and “what is.” While Lynette performed, transforming her stage into an otherworldly landscape, she occasionally held pieces of charcoal in each hand and elegantly translated her movement onto a canvas upon which she danced. Along with Hein Botha’s mystical dialogue floating above the music and motion, a wonderful dynamism and poetry occurred. This unfolding invited artists to paint along to the music and movement and helped them perceive both positive and negative spaces contained within their work. A simple examination of line, content and form resulted in a greater collaborative dance and a deep meditation on the heft of a single mark on paper.

Selected works from the workshop will be exhibited at SCAVA’s next exhibition, ‘Collaborative Flow” during 14 March – 2 May 2024.

FOR OUR SCAVA MEMBERS:

Here is a list of important dates of our main exhibitions for the year of 2024.

We have other events and workshops lined up for the year and will share more information with you as our plans unfold.

In the meantime please use these dates as a guideline for planning for our upcoming exhibitions, which we’d love for you all to be a part of.

Please note, none of the exhibitions are strictly themed, allowing you the freedom to exhibit works you are interested in working on and enjoy creating.

Our March exhibition will include the works from our Mark making/movement workshop with Hein Botha, hence the ‘movement’ component on our programme.
