🚨THIS IS A PLEA TO ALL RESIDENTS ACROSS OUR MUNICIPAL AREA!🚨

The safety of our municipal officials who attend to after-hours service delivery calls is under serious threat due to a rise in crime-related incidents, intimidation, and the theft of essential municipal equipment.

As the municipality, we would like to call on our residents to assist in safeguarding officials working in their communities. If our officials are not safe, your service delivery complaints cannot be attended to in the appropriate manner or completed within appropriate timeframes. So I would like to plea to our residents to assist where they can to ensure that our officials are safe on the job so that complaints can be attended to.

Well done MMC Social Development Sport Cllr Melvin Roelfse and our Social Development Department for this amazing initiative. The People Living On The Streets (PLOTS) initiative is one that seeks to support the homeless through reunification and jobs skills training.

The forum attended by Cllr Melvin Roelfse works on an integrated, holistic approach to address the needs of the homeless.

Today MMC Social Development Sport Cllr Melvin Roelfse attended the PLOTS Committee meeting that focus on the phenomena of People Living on the street, or what is also been referred to as some people whom are homeless.

This Important Meeting took Place at the George Municipality Social Development department at 10h00am 11 September 2024.
Various Government Departments as well as Civil Society Organization attended, together with Officials from George Municipality.

People living on the streets affects Families, Communities, Businesses as well as the Municipality. This forum works in an Integrated Holistic approach where all role players each has a specific function when it comes to addressing the needs for people living on the streets, whether children, youth, adults, elderly or people with dissability.

This meeting looks at effective ways on how to Curb Plots, but also at rehabilitation and developing the skills of Plots, reintegration back into families, Job skills programme's and lobbying for resources to address these concerns.

Through Project Hope, Our Municipality have thus far assisted many people, not only from George, but also with families outside of George, Capetown, JHb to be reunited with their families and have developed programme's where Plots can sustain themselves through sewing, beadwork and woodwork.

This programme also forms part of our Vision of our New Executive Mayor Jackie von Brandis, to make George a Safer City for all.
We are looking at various plans in future to efficiently curb this prevalence of People.living on the streets.

If you would like to become part of this solution, please contact our MMC on 0743680729 or visit our Social Development Office behind the Glass building in York street.

I was invited to take a tour of the grounds at Outeniqua High School this morning with Principal Christo Vorster and Messrs Fillip Venter and Jacques Els.

It was great to meet some of the staff at the school and check out their excellent facilities, including the laboratories, their music room and their hydroponics farming green house.

We Forge Ahead With Safety

As we continue to expand into a larger city, so do the challenges related to the safety of our citizens, visitors, and businesses. In response, our Community Safety Division has developed an Integrated Community Safety Strategy designed to ensure the safety of all who reside, study, visit, work, and invest in George.

Earlier this week our MMCs and I had the opportunity to see the work being done by Community Safety and view the new Opps Centre.

Safety is essential to creating viable, competitive, and sustainable cities, and local government is the most effective driver of this goal. Cities offer opportunities for people from all walks of life, but they also concentrate crime and violence. This strategy aims to mitigate safety risks while addressing the challenges that accompany the city’s growth. I am so proud of the work being done by Community Safety and Cllr Stamhoof Brendon Torob Adams to ensure that George Municipality is a safe city.
