My new latest find...and I LOVE IT SO!!

Prickly Pear oil.

I am going to take some time over the next few days to tell you more about this INCREDIBLE INDIGENOUS gem of an oil....grown right here in South Africa.
Free State and Northern Cape regions so they are naturally equipped to deal with 'dry'.
( Because as I keep saying - our local oils are first class 😉)

First up...did you know... the oil is made by cold pressing the oil out of the seeds of the fruits.
It is one of the most expensive oils due to the fact that it take 500kg (Kilo grams) of seed to produce 1L oil!
Note: half a ton of fruit only produces one litre!!!
The seeds only contain 5% oil so extraction yields are low per batch.

Extracting the fruit from the seed is a lengthy process which can take up to 4days, and time is of the essence as a season only lasts a few months.

Thus it is one of the most expensive oils available.

Did you know?

During winter, the cold air sucks moisture threw the protective layer of your skin - this often happens rapidly, damaging the barrier which results in further loss of moisture.
This can lead to 'winter-itch' because of impaired barrier function, which affects your nerve endings and causes itching.

Remember there is dryness from lack of WATER.
This leads to wrinkles, flakey, sagging skin.
Then there is dryness from lack of OIL.

To have a beautiful glowing skin...you need more of a skin-deep understanding of how it works, reacts and what it needs.

Lets start with understanding the skin types:

👩 Dry Skin - you will probably experience rough, itchy, flaky skin, sensitive patches and a feeling of looking and feeling tired.
➡️ caused by impaired skin barrier

👩 Oily Skin - result of excess sebum production which traps bacteria in the pores causing recurring breakouts, ance, blackheads and clogged pores
➡️ caused by genetics, environmental factors, incorrect diets, poor skin care practices.

👩 Sensitive Skin - you experience patches of burning, stinging, itchy skin. Red flakey patches may occur and may be in combination with other skin types, and part of greater skin condition like rosacea or eczema
➡️ caused by impaired skin barrier

👩 Combination Skin - patches of dry and oily skin. Usually oily on T-zone (forehead, nose, cheeks, chin). With dry flakey patches on cheeks, and possibly high on forehead.
➡️ caused by genetics, hormone imbalances, environmental factors, poor skincare routine

👩 Normal Skin - a natural glow of well nourished skin. No signs of dryness, flakiness, irritation or oiliness.

Just in case you thought an oil based cleanser wasn't a good idea... hear us out:

🤍 Cleansing (oil based cleanser) helps maintain pH levels, which enables sufficient water and product retention - therefore keeping your skin hydrated, and looking younger.

🤍 Skin glands produce an oil called sebum which protects the skin from bacteria and blockages. If the skin is dirty, the glands become blocked making it difficult for oil to reach the surface. The lack of sebum allows the bacteria to pe*****te the follicle causing inflammation leading to acne breakouts.
An oil based cleanser is better able to pe*****te the blocked pores, where water would simply wash over.

Tips:

🤍 Cleansing in the morning removes sweat and dead skin cells shed during the night.

🤍 Your skin is exposed to pollutants during the day (which can be carcinogenic) and is best removed for better complexion.

🤍 Make sure your cleanser is alcohol and chemical free as these disturb the pH balance, and cause dehydration

🤍 Avoid fake/synthetic perfumes/fragrances in your skin care products.

A few important things to remember when exfoliating!

🧖‍♀️ For dry skins - only exfoliate once a week
🧖‍♀️ For oily skins - exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week
🧖‍♀️ Night time is best for exfoliation because it encourages skin to repair itself while you sleep
🧖‍♀️ Cleanse your skin first to remove surface dirt, make-up and impurities
🧖‍♀️ Exfoliate after cleansing to allow better access to dead skin cells
🧖‍♀️ Use small circular motions for 30 secs then rinse off with lukewarm water (not hot)
🧖‍♀️ Always moisturise after exfoliating
🧖‍♀️ Never exfoliate if you have open cuts, wounds or sun damage.
