DR MARGARET MNCADI LIBRARY HOSTED A SUCCESSFUL SPELLING BEE COMPETITION FINALS

Ubuhlebezwe Municipality, 4 September 2024 – Dr. Margaret Mncadi (Ixopo) ILibrary, in collaboration with the Department of Education, successfully hosted the finals of the annual Spelling Bee Competition on 3 September 2024. The event saw participation from 25 schools, with 18 schools making it through to the final round after a series of elimination rounds.

The competition was structured in two phases, beginning with the Circuit level, held from 22nd to 25th July 2024, across various circuits where the participating schools are located. The top performers from each circuit advanced to the Municipality level, culminating in the finals hosted by Dr. Margaret Mncadi Library at Peace Initiative Hall.

The following schools made it to the finals from their respective circuits:

- Miskofile Circuit: Sfiso Primary, Maryhelp Primary, Khuluma Primary, and Carisbrook Primary.
- Lufafa Circuit: Mahehle Primary, Ncakubana Primary, Senzakahle Primary, and Cekazi Primary.
- Jolivet Circuit: Sangcwaba Primary, Hluthankungu Primary, Mazongo Primary, and Esiqandulweni Primary.
- Jamangweni Circuit: Mhlabashana Junior, Mhlabashana Senior, SKEY, Nobengela Primary, Masheshisa Primary, and Malezulu Primary.

The finals were a display of exceptional spelling prowess across all grades, with the following learners achieving top positions:

- 2nd & 3rd Positions: Mahehle Primary

GRADE 5:
- 1st Position: Ncakubana Primary
- 2nd Position: Khuluma Primary

HONORING CLLR CN NTABENI FOR YEARS OF REMARKABLE SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

Yesterday, the Vuka Mbokodo Women's Programme witnessed a deeply significant moment as we paid tribute to Cllr CN Ntabeni, the Portfolio Chairperson of the Community and Social Services Department at Ubuhlebezwe Municipality. Cllr Ntabeni was celebrated for her dedication to public service and her remarkable leadership, being one of the longest-serving politicians and leaders in our region.

The Mayor, Cllr EB Ngubo, expressed profound appreciation for Cllr Ntabeni's contributions, not only to the government but also to the broader movement for the emancipation of black people. The Mayor emphasised Cllr Ntabeni's important role in mentoring the current generation of leaders, highlighting how her influence has shaped the lives and careers of many.

"All of us were mentored and molded by Cllr Ntabeni," Mayor Ngubo remarked. "She led the movement during some of the most challenging times when black people were marginalised and severely affected by poverty. Her courage, resilience, and vision have left an indelible mark on our society."

Mayor Ngubo also highlighted the importance of recognising and appreciating our leaders while they are still with us. "It is important that we honour and celebrate the contributions of our leaders in their lifetime. Cllr Ntabeni's legacy is one of hope, strength, and commitment to the betterment of our community."

WRAPPING UP WOMEN’S MONTH: UBUHLEBEZWE MUNICIPALITY HOSTS SUCCESSFUL VUKA MBOKODO PROGRAMME

Ubuhlebezwe Municipality, today, successfully concluded its Women’s Month activities with the impactful Vuka Mbokodo programme. Held at Jolivet Hall, the event was organised under the theme “Building Communities Starts from Building Better Families", focusing on the vital role of women in addressing family-related issues that can affect the broader society.

The day’s activities commenced with a peaceful walk, led by Her Worship the Mayor, Cllr EB Ngubo, starting from Jolivet Store to Jolivet Hall. The walk was a symbolic gesture of unity and strength, setting the tone for the day’s discussions and engagements.

At Jolivet Hall, women from various communities were given a platform to voice their concerns and share their experiences. The program featured a series of insightful talks by distinguished panel members who provided valuable strategies for overcoming the challenges faced by women within their families, including issues related to in-laws, classism, and divisions that can impede the prosperity of society as a whole.

This event marked a significant step towards empowering women and strengthening the foundation of our communities, reinforcing the Municipality’s commitment to promote a society where women’s voices are heard, and their contributions are celebrated.

SOCIAL RELIEF OF DISTRESS HANDOVER TO DISASTER VICTIMS

Today, Ubuhlebezwe Municipality Mayor, Cllr. E.B. Ngubo, handed over social relief of distress packages to 20 families from Ward 1 (Ncakubana and Mahhehle) and Ward 3 (Ufafa/Mashakeni).

These families were severely affected by the heavy rains and resulting disasters. In collaboration with various stakeholders and independent organizations, the municipality received assistance from The South African Red Cross Society and Eskom.

The relief items distributed to the beneficiaries included sponges, blankets, electrical buckets, hygiene packs, food packs, and kitchen supplies.

While these items may be modest, they are intended to help these families begin to rebuild their lives after the disasters that have impacted them so deeply.

READING DEVELOPMENT COMPETITION

Ubuhlebezwe hosted a successful Reading Development Competition with City of Johannesburg MobiReadathon Competition .

MobiReadathon is an award-winning program designed to introduce youth to digital reading and writing resources using their personal mobile devices. As part of our Digital and Mobile Literacy initiatives, the program engages learners in the productive use of their mobile devices.

Eight provinces joined the program. In KZN, Ubuhlebezwe Municipality had the highest number of participants, and an impressive number of learners made it to the finals. This success attracted officials from the City of Johannesburg, who came down to KZN to support us in hosting the finals

Out of over 16 participating high schools, 7 schools from Ubuhlebezwe made it to the final round:
- Sizisizwe High School
- Kwathathani High School
- Hlokozi High School
- Mariathal Combined School
- Little Flower
- Nokweja High School
- Nkomose High School

Ginyani High School from Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality News also advanced, making it a total of 8 schools competing in the Harry Gwala District finals.

Congratulations to the top three schools, all from Ubuhlebezwe:
1. Kwathathani High School - 1st Place 🥇
2. Little Flower - 2nd Place 🥈
3. Nokweja High School - 3rd Place 🥉

With only one main library in the vast Ubuhlebezwe municipality, this program will significantly benefit students in remote areas by providing access to digital stories. It aims to revive the culture of reading among our youth. Ixopo library’s E-book service is automatically promoted through this program, making stories more accessible to high school learners.

MAYOR’S SPECIAL WOMEN’S FORUM PLANNING MEETING

In preparation for the Women’s Day program on 29 August 2024 at Jolivet Hall, Ubuhlebezwe held a productive Mayor’s Special Women’s Forum Planning Meeting at the Council Chamber in Ixopo.

The aim of the plenary meeting was to ensure that the women’s structure is well informed and engaged with the preparations of this year’s Women’s Day program.

This year’s theme will be inspired by the real challenges reported by women in our wards. We believe it is crucial to address these issues head-on and create a platform where women’s voices can be heard and acted upon.
