Have you guys seen The Tinder Swindler yet?
It’s a top documentary on Netflix right now and cinematographer 🎥 gives a breakdown!
Breakdown:
We wanted to get that intimate feel for the interviews. An experience of a romantic date. Hence the little hints from both the production design (i.e., the second wine glass) and the lighting.
We went with a much more intimate lighting setup comparing to the usual interview approach.
Both interviews were lit with Litemat Plus-3 with egg-crates. For Cecilie it was 1x, Pernilla 2x + each had practicals on the table with 60w bulbs, dimmed.
The idea was to wrap the practical slightly while lifting the shadows in the "scene" a bit.
Pernilla's green restaurant location provided an abundance of houselights reflected, so I just dimmed them right down, but still to the level these would register - providing some depth to the space.
Both interviews went for hours, but Cecilie's location had this small window behind her that would giveaway the time passing, so we tented it up and added a single astera which produced a constant cold glow for that sky-just-past-the-sunset feel.
The film was shot on the Red Komodo (the first Netflix doc to have these approved!). ISO 800, 4000K white balance. The lenses were Todd AOs anamorphics.

This is how you light a cinematic interview

On the second slide, you can see the kind of equipment that was used for this shot.
Notes from director
As we shot throughout the day, two different interviews (with two different people), the outside light dropped rapidly since it was still mid-winter. We chose to do a 'bright' setting and a darker one. The BG fill light wasn't used in this shot, but in the second interview. On the 3rd shot, you can see the .lighting with a 2x fresnel shining bright creating a hard edge (which I like).
The .lighting 600x with a massive 150 dome attached creates a beautiful soft source as our keylight. I choose such a big softbox to be able to place it a bit further out and still create a nice soft wrap on the talent his face. For sound, we used the NTG5. It has good low-end, nice range.
The Matthews flag was used to block a bit of light from the top windows, thus creating more contrast on the face.
Overall, not a crazy complicated setup. It worked and it created a nice image. Of course, the location helped tremendously setting the feeling of this shot.
Director and I are working on a documentary about skateboarding. Hence the location ;-).

Let me say this one more time for the people in the back:
You can have the most expensive camera in the world but if your lighting sucks. Well.. go figure.
