GARETH CALVERT
University of KwaZulu-Natal

๐Ÿ“š THESIS:

An Exploration of Childhood Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Through Architecture: Towards an Inclusive Education Facility in Greater Durban.

Gareth's research examines ADHD, which affects 5% of school-aged children and causes learning and behavioural difficulties. Current mainstream school designs have not considered the effect that ADHD has on children, and the architectural response of existing schools is not customised to their needs. The study aimed to develop an alternative educational architectural typology for grades 1โ€“7 that emphasises inclusive and positive learning environments. Architectural considerations should focus on a child's sensory experiences, connecting perception to emotions and memories. Feeling safe is critical for a child's development, prompting architects to design environments that relate to the home. Phenomenological characteristics such as size, scale, form, and colour must be carefully considered to create an environment in which children with ADHD may flourish emotionally and intellectually. Furthermore, engaging with nature benefits mood, social connections, and cognitive function, while an inclusive design approach promotes cooperation and a feeling of place. Integrating these ideas allows architects to design spaces that will enable children with ADHD to feel included in mainstream schools.

TARYN GLAZEBROOK
University of Pretoria

๐Ÿ“š THESIS:

Marabastad: From Arrival to Revival

The project in Marabastad aims to support migrants and informal traders, fostering community and aiding integration. Marabastad, a vibrant but challenged area in Pretoria, faces issues of poverty and exclusion. The project seeks to harness the potential of the community, providing support for newcomers and enhancing existing networks. Strategically located, it facilitates access and integration, addressing arrival issues. The design emphasizes pedestrian-oriented architecture, creating safe and welcoming spaces. Programmes include trading facilities, job centers, and community spaces. Materials like brick and timber balance tradition with innovation. The project aligns with modern ideas of belonging, recognizing the importance of social relationships. By leveraging the informal sector, it addresses both migration and economic development. Encouraging interaction between newcomers and residents benefits both groups. Through its design and approach, the project illustrates architecture's role in fostering integration and community in a diverse urban environment.

ARRAN WOOD
University of the Free State

๐Ÿ“š THESIS:

Spectral Flesh โ€“ Remembrance.

The Angola-South African War left extensive scars and remains a raw place in the lives of many South Africans. Yet the memory and memorialisation of the conflict has become a shrouded spectre. One of the most obscured fallouts of the war was the fact that South Africa managed to construct nuclear weapons and became the first nation to decommission their nuclear arsenal voluntarily. Still, the majority forgets the haunting effects in the hearts of those conscripted into the war and the suffering enforced by it. The manifestation of this amnesia-like state comes in the form of the nuclear weapons site, rusting and forgotten. Through a symbolic repurposing of decommissioned fi****ms in a foundry and the remembrance of spectres from the site in an inverted monument, a design is proposed to reveal the forgotten and censored. The architecture of spectral remembrance attempts to explore the role the built can play as a mediator and reminder of forgotten conflicts.

KELLY DE GOUVEIA
University of Cape Town

๐Ÿ“š THESIS:

Crafting Endurance: form, time, space, and memory in the construction of a civic urban artefact for cape townโ€™s east city.

In response to the rapid and wasteful trends in urban development spurred by technological advancements and industrial demands, the project proposes the creation of a new Civic Stitch within Cape Town's East City. This multi-purpose public facility, primarily housing the department of home affairs, seeks to counteract the privatization and fragmentation of cities by fostering a slow city life ethos. Through a design that incorporates elements of time, form, space, and memory, the Civic Stitch aims to mend the disjointed civic realm between Cape Town's City Centre and District Six, prioritising endurance and sustainability over expedience. By valuing craftsmanship, use-value, and long-term durability, the project advocates for a shift towards a more thoughtful and enduring approach to architecture and urban development.

GIDEON WILLIAMS
Nelson Mandela University

๐Ÿ“š THESIS:

The design of an archive at Kingโ€™s Beach, Gqeberha.

In the intention of satisfying the desires of the deviant and chaotic city, and as a subversion of the ruling ideologies and attitudes towards what is โ€˜properโ€™ and what is โ€˜worthwhileโ€™, the project invents a useless, idiotic, whimsical architecture that houses all the unwanted and unrepresented objects in the city, giving the voiceless a platform to scream.
The manifestation of a thousand whims and whispers of inanimate and animate creatures, who all want to burst forth dancing and plundering. A house, a hotel, an archive for the chaos of the city. The project aims not to please or to succeed, but rather to subvert, diverge, and invent. This is the search for an architectural anomaly. An anti-default.

LETLHOGONOLO SESANA
Tshwane University of Technology

๐Ÿ“š THESIS:

Investigating architecture's role in preserving South African birth rituals.

Letlhogonolo's project delves into the intersection of selfhood, spirituality, and space in African contexts, enriching architectural discourse by exploring the role of architecture in preserving birth rituals amid cultural erosion in South Africa. The study proposes architectural interventions rooted in communalism and metaphysical continuity, advocating for the integration of cultural values into design to foster identity preservation. Additionally, it recognizes architecture as a medium through which rituals, representing metaphysical journeys across time, materialize. This understanding underscores architecture's capacity to articulate, preserve, and empower individual and communal identities. Through this holistic lens, architecture emerges as a transformative force, bridging past, present, and future narratives while embodying the essence of cultural expression and continuity.

TITUS SH*TAATALA
University of Johannesburg

๐Ÿ“š THESIS:

The Archive of Silences: Redistributing Archival Power through Phygital Spaces in Pretoria

Titus' project uses Marabastad as a tester site - the Archive of Silence(s) looks to decentralize and redistribute archival power from the biased National Archives of South Africa to South African communities.
Following the stateโ€™s attempts to rid Pretoria of townships in 2023, the frequent demolitions and the subsequent soil erosion will see Marabastad develop into a dust wasteland stripped of its heritage by the year 2045.
The remaining residents begin to build the Archive of Silence(s) using a robotic arm, cotton canvas, steel and artifact-embedded concrete-methylcellulose panels in a process that subverts the discriminatory archival system practiced at the National Archives.
The archive is built to describe chosen community narratives using artefacts of memory and is designed to decay and be rebuilt after every twenty years to grant future generations the opportunity to spatially reconstruct history as a manifesto for their future.

SABELA RAY VILA
University of the Witwatersrand

๐Ÿ“š THESIS:

Revitalising the vintage: Supporting novel ways of living for older adults in Galicia, Spain.

Sabela's thesis investigates the issue of rural village abandonment in Spain, particularly focusing on Galicia where a significant number of villages have been deserted, with many more at risk annually. It highlights the neglect of elderly residents in these areas during rejuvenation efforts. The research explores the causes of abandonment, the spatial organisation of villages, and various revitalisation strategies. It proposes a comprehensive masterplan for Paradela, an abandoned village, aiming to restore its architectural heritage, foster economic sustainability, and improve support services for elderly residents, while serving as a model for surrounding villages.
