For Piano Industry staff, no two days are alike, no appointment is alike!

Yesterday, Rudi had the honor to prepare a Yamaha grand piano at Sumo Sound Recording Studio for Coenie De Villiers, much to his pleasure. Today he's "operating" on a Steinway upright piano that needs professional help after failed previous restoration.

These two beautiful pianos have been refinished, mechanically repaired and delivered to their new forever homes in Eastern Cape.

Although our main focus is mechanical servicing and restorations to improve pianos , cosmetic revamping is often part of our work as well - cabinet refinishing, replacement of cosmetic felts and polishing of brass parts on pianos.

Piano Industry believes in continuous education, passing on knowledge, and improving ourselves. Education does not end with completed apprenticeship, completed and successful tuning or even restoration. We aim to teach the young generation as well as seasoned staff.

To give our clients the best possible service and pianos, we invest greatly in education. Usually, this is on daily basis with our apprentices, workshop staff as well as office staff, regularly with our senior technicians, and occasionally, our senior technicians travel overseas to add to their already incredibly vast knowledge.

This month it is Rudi Strydom’s turn as he is travelling throughout Germany attending seminars and advanced training in piano restorations and rebuilds with Steinway & Sons specialised master piano builders.

Soundboard and bridge repairs is one of the main topics and are very relevant to South Africa. Our climate and the aging of the imported pianos are greatly affecting pianos in a negative way no matter what the brand. However, costs of new pianos and import costs often make the dream of having an excellent instrument seemingly impossible. Knowing how to restore pianos well and how to bring them back to their best possible condition is becoming the most cost-effective way for pianists locally.

Here is a look at some of Rudi’s experience so far; exquisitely rebuilt Steinway pianos one could almost mistake for new instruments (inside and out). We invite you to come and hear the perfection at our own premises soon!

Piano tuning is a job that our technicians do on almost daily basis, many for private clients having their pianos tuned as part of regular maintenance. Our latest trip included a grand piano we have serviced and fitted with new hammers recently, restored Steinway grand, a lovely Otto Bach upright piano and a new Steinway grand.

We recommend annual tuning for pianos not regularly used, if you play piano three or more times a week, tuning every 3-6 months will be necessary.

Piano tuning may seem like basic work done on a piano, but it is a very important part of piano maintenance and makes much difference in the overall sound of the piano. Our piano technicians have experience in upright and grand pianos and will assist you with understanding your piano's condition and maintenance.

Today we are visiting Hoërskool Monument High, a wonderful school with a dedicated music department.

Their grand piano is going to be serviced, including Precision Touch Design (PTD).

PTD is a very specialized service we offer for grand pianos where we optimize the touch and tone beyond the scope of weigh-off (replacing key leads). Whether your piano feels too light, too heave or too uneven, this innovative process will solve the issue.

Our technicians will perform a detailed weight analysis of single action components (including transmission ratio to action, irregularity of strike weight, balance weight and keyboard-lead weighting of the keys), re-balance action and keyboard equally while considering pianists' preferences. This process can take up to 50 hours resulting in fully and perfectly balanced piano.

Piano Industry was buzzing this past weekend! We have worked on our beautiful Petrof baby grand, Rudi tuned the Steinway & Sons concert grand at Linder Auditorium, The National School of the Arts' grand piano is getting specialized servicing in preparation for the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra arriving this week for practicing, replacing keybushing on a private client's piano, preparing new key tops for a hire piano and starting a mechanical service on another hire piano as all our pianos are serviced before delivery to clients. And lastly a restored Steinway Model Z upright piano was being prepared for final voicing.

This weekend alone, Roedean School South Africa will have a concert after their Music competition came to an end earlier this week, Symphony Choir of Johannesburg and Richard C**k will perform Carmina Burana at Linder Auditorium accompanied by two pianos. There is a very special recording happening this weekend at SABC Music Library’s Studio using their Steinway Model D concert grand piano and Recitals at Glenshiel will present Pieter Grobler on Sunday!

And if you need more music during the week, The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at Linder Auditorium on 8th June, 15th June and 22nd June!

Johannesburg Musical Society - Since 1902 is also hosting some greats in June! On Sunday 11th June Emanuil Ivanov and on 18th June the much-anticipated Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, both at the Linder Auditorium.

We had a busy weekend, tuning for Amit Yahav, a wonderful classical pianist, around the country.

First Rudi tuned piano at Odeion in Bloemfontein for Free State Symphony Orchestra , had the pleasure to attend the concert on Saturday night and while he was busy travelling back to Johannesburg, Chris was tuning at Linder for Johannesburg Musical Society - Since 1902 on Sunday morning.
