RICHMOND DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH.
Originally consecrated in 1847 as a relatively simple structure, the steeple and the two wings of the church were added in 1906. The imposing pulpit in the church, reputed to be the tallest in the country, was hand-carved by L.F. Anhuyse, also responsible for carving the pulpit in the Groote Kerk in Cape Town.

This imposingly large oil on blocked canvas painting (1.5m x 1.2m) was created by renowned South African artist and author Johan Vlok Louw from a photo by documentary film maker A.J. Venter. The painting is a amalgamation of characters and emotions in Louw's bush war novel (by the same name-"Eric the Brave"- published in 2012). It stands proud as a tribute to the men and women who served, fought, and died in South Africa's 24 year long Angola bush war conflict. Cleverly hidden in the semi abstract background, names such as 'oom Magnus', 'oom Constand', and 'Cuito Cuanavale' can be found. A certificate of authenticity, signed by the artist, will be issued with the artwork.

Johan Vlok Louw is the author of the novels ERIC THE BRAVE, A GAP IN THE HEDGE, KAROO DUSK, which was shortlisted for the University of Johannesburg Prize for Creative Writing and translated into Afrikaans, and SONS OF MUD. Born in Cape Town, he studied Fine Art and Design after his military service. He has worked as an art lecturer and held various managerial positions in the corporate world. Today he writes, paints and teaches these disciplines privately and online.
