Slumbering at the foot of the Dumbe mountain in Paulpietersburg, Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, RollingRyno, and I came across the delightfully eclectic Fels Retreat Guest House.
A hidden gem, crowned with a silver waterfall, and cloaked in mystical nature, just waiting to welcome the weary traveler.
Sarina, with her friendly staff, ensure that on arrival you are ensconced in an invitingly cosy environment for your stay, (long or short) and that when it is time for you to take your leave, a little piece of your heart remains.

Maurie, Liefiekind (love child) , Savannah, and Princess will pop in to check that your room is in order and that you are settling in.
Watching the little family of Miniature Horses romp about the grounds will have you in giggles, and my bet is you will find your inner child during your stay.

Accommodation varies from luxury to dormitory and even camping if that is your thing.
The yummiest food is served in a dining room where each table is beautifully and uniquely themed. The large, pristine grounds entice even the hardiest "couch potato" to venture out and explore.

Fels Retreat, originally a Catholic mission, a monastery, with a beautiful chapel on the grounds, hosts weddings and functions, seating 150 guests.
The perfect venue for weddings, reunions, celebrations, as well as a bucket list destination for a country style weekend away or a nature loving family holiday.

Graceful creatures ... Sharing time and space with the giraffes at DeWildt 4X4 Game Park always uplifts my spirit.
If you walk with care and soft footfalls you will be able to experience the wildlife up close and personal on the park's hiking trails.

RollingRyno & myself were treated to a short family getaway with our son, daughter & in-laws, in Swellendam, a picturesque town in the Western Cape.
Founded in 1745, by the Dutch East India Company, Swellendam is a small town with a big heart.
"Bo-Kapie", the beautiful, historical guesthouse we stayed in. It's architecture, walls & and rooms are steeped in the memories and stories of people and families long gone.
We spent many hours in the warm and cozy heart of the home, the room with the massive hearth or, as they say in Afrikaans - "vuur herd".

Museums were visited with much interest and a sense of awe at how the "old" people lived and worked.
Flea-market stalls of talented creators were browsed, and a few lucky trinkets went home with us.
The quaint village shops were window shopped from top to bottom.
The most divine pizzas and delicious Dom Pedro's were consumed at the Woodpecker Pizzadeli Restuarant ...yum!
Then, a visit to the Selena Fairy Sanctuary. A stunning nature garden filled with a smorgasbord of magical creatures, big to small, in every colour of the rainbow.
On our way out of the little town, we made a stop and were welcomed into the serene forest at Masbiekers Valley Park for a walk and bonding time with our son and daughter. This was much needed food for the soul. https://masbiekersvalleyprojectorg.wordpress.com/2019/01/20/history-of-masbiekers-valley/https://

Surrounded on all sides by nature, historical buildings on tree-lined streets, and friendly people, you will not run out of things to do and see.

River, mountains, and nature... what more could a person want?
Ryno and I had a gap in our calendar, so we took a weekend away to Berg en Rivier Country Lodge.
One of our favourite places as their accommodation options suit our moods whether we want rustic private camping next to a river, camping within the lodges walled & fenced grounds or lodge accommodations. They have rooms to suit all needs from couples to family groups.
This beautiful place is soaked in nature and rustic/antique atmosphere with a stunning backdrop of mountains, bush, and river.
The owners Johan & Ria are warm, welcoming people who open their home to visitors like family.
Activities at the lodge range from unguided nature walks, bird watching, and mountain hikes to 4x4ing (your own vehicle).

Living our dream ...
My hubby 🔽 ( ) is a wonder to watch when he is in the training zone.
He is passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience in 4x4 driver training THE RIGHT WAY the first time.
We are nature lovers/warriors and share how people can get their 4x4/overlanding experience without harming delicate ecosystems and the environment.
Every action you perform has a consequence, and as such, we 4x4 consciously for the love of nature, our country and life.

Blouberg Strand -
a stretch of the Western Cape coastline very close to my heart.
Nostalgic memories of my father, whose favourite pastime was to sit on
" his" beach bench and "people watch" while enjoying a soft serve ice-cream.
The place where we said our final goodbyes.

This beach is unlike others in the area, the "sand" is more crushed shells than the fine beach sand we are accustomed to.
It is a smorgasbord of colour, a feast for the eyes and food for the soul.

Ryno and myself had the opportunity to spend a couple of days at the Belle Maroc Boutique Hotel on the beachfront.
It was love at first sight. The decor!
A rich, earthy, warm and natural colour pallette.
Natural fibers & textures. Vibrant patterns and an understated atmosphere of luxury.
The panoramic views from various decks, cozy corners and sheltered garden nooks ensure everyone's tastes are catered for.
To top it all the staff were amazingly friendly, helpful and professional.
This little corner of the Western Cape is on my Bucket list for a revisit.

... Elephants, waterlilys & the Boteti river in Botswana.
The pulse of life, edged with lush green vegetation, snaking through the semi‐arid region.
Enticing wildlife, big and small, to seek relief from the heat of the day.
How to find the words to convey the feelings I experienced in this beautiful place?
The potently heady mix of the cool tranquility of the river and the prehistoric predatory dangers lurking beneath the calm waters and within the tree's shadowed skirts. in Africa

Solitary walking in nature is a precious experience of all 6 senses.
DeWildt 4X4 Game Park is one of our "home away from home" places. I get to spend hours "becoming" one with nature, solitary hiking the varying landscape.
On one such hike I photographed this velvety bloom. Another beautiful South African native tree/shrub occurring in open or wooded grassland areas on rocky ridges.
The word "caffra" is derived from Kaffraria, which in the 17th century, was the geographical name for the eastern regions of South Africa.

In such bad taste...

And so it is...

Lycus melanarus - The Hook-winged Net-winged beetle's
defence strategy is to secrete a toxin from between the joints in their legs when threatened.

Cantharidin is an odourless, colourless fatty substance which burns and blisters on contact. In large enough doses it poisons.

Their wings produce toxins called pyrazines, a foul smelling and tasting shock to any predator brave enough to take a bite of this orange black-banded individual.

The toxin is only released when the ridges on the wings are broken as they are being eaten, leaving a nasty taste and warning for the predator to leave this beetle off the menu.

The beetles themselves feast on plant sap, flower nectar, and occasionally slime molds; while the larvae hunt about on the leaf layer of the ground for small arthropods and eat rotting wood.

Out for a much needed solitary hike on the DeWildt 4X4 nature hike trail, I was filming a nest of leaf-cutter ants when the grass swayed in the wind and revealed this dapple beetle who was a little camera shy.
Conchyloctenia tripunticollis.

The tortoise beetles resemble miniature tortoises, (especially when viewed from above).
They are flattened oval to disc shaped, with their heads hidden beneath a "thoracic shield" called a pronotum.
The wing covers overlap the body.

These leaf eating beetles come in a dazzling array of vivid and/or metalic colours and patterns that glitter like precious metals and gemstones in the sun.

There are 430 species and South Africa is home to at least 126 of these.
Several species are a menace as agricultural pests while some are used as biological control agents in the fight against invasive plant species.

It always amazes me when I walk through the African bush and come across such tiny, perfectly delicate, snow white flowers, secretly tucked away within the protection of the tougher vegetation.

Sunsets and river cruises - 🇧🇼 Botswana.
There are no words to describe the other worldly energy that saturated the surrounding atmosphere as we made a slow return journey back to the dock. The metallic colours rippling and glinting in the wake of our boat. The cicadas thrumming to the beat of the engine, flocks of birds making their way back to their nesting sites, and rummbling elephants grazing on the river grass, all coming together to set the scene for another epic African sunset experience.
Join us on one of our trips to share some of these breathtaking experiences with us:
