We encourage you to read the full study (citation further down) but here is part of their conclusions:

"The key findings from the present study confirm the tested hypothesis as we found a significant association between companion dog puppyhood and adolescence diet and the tendency to develop chronic enteropathy (gastrointestinal issues) in adulthood. Feeding a non-processed meat-based diet, even as an addition to ultra-processed food, and giving the dog human meal leftovers and table scraps were found to be protective against CE later in life. Especially raw bones and cartilage, berries and leftovers were found to be beneficial. Therefore, we conclude that providing a variety of fresh, “real” foods for the dog especially during puppyhood, but also at young age, was identified as a significant potential protective factor of CE incidence later in life. On the contrary, feeding mainly or exclusively UPCD, namely dry dog food or “kibble”, during puppyhood and adolescence, or rawhides at least a couple of times in a month during puppyhood were found to be significant potential risk factors for CE later in life."

🚨 Another Broken Chain: The Rescue of Misty and Rex

In the heart of Cape Town's midwinter, the air feels freezing with howling winds and relentless rain, as only the Cape of Storms can conjure up this time of year.

Imagine being exposed to this brutal weather, chained, with no escape. This was the reality for two innocent souls, Misty and Rex.

🐶 Misty, a gentle dog used relentlessly as a breeding machine, and Rex, a mere puppy at three months old, knew nothing of life beyond the cruel chain that bound him. Their so-called shelter, barely shielding or protecting them from the storms, a hopeless case as the area around them began to flood.

But as fate would have it, an alert by a concerned resident to the Inspectors of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA prompted a rescue mission with officers from the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement. Their timely intervention saved Misty and Rex!

🚑 Upon arrival, the team was met with despair: Misty and Rex, shivering and visibly distressed. With heavy hearts and ready hands, our Inspectors quickly freed them from their chains. As the chains fell to the ground, so too did their days living in cruelty.

Unfortunately, finding accessible and comprehensive nutrition education for our dogs can be challenging unless we actively seek it out and have a genuine interest in their diet.

Shadow and (not so) baby Forrest got to finally meet while Katherine was down in Jozi this week! Needless to say these two hooligans had a great time getting to know each other 🥎🐕

During the teenager stages of puppyhood - which Forrest at almost 8 months is smack dab in the middle of - it’s important for puppies to have older role model dogs to not only show them the ropes, but keep them in line.

We can do so much for our dogs, but that dog-to-dog communication is always valuable and Forrest definitely learned some lessons in respect and boundaries from Shadow!
