Why is it that we keep putting off making our health a priority?
It's quite simple really: we think it will never get that bad.
In 2008 I had go for full bloods because I was tired all the time, with joint inflammation and, weighing in at 105kg, things were not looking good. The results came back that I was on the cusp of type 2 diabetes. The initial thought was "well I don't want to have to inject myself everyday". What I didn't realise was the damage I was doing to my body and what could happen if I didn't change now.
We have only 1 body, you can't order a new one online, and once the damage has been done, you can't reverse it.
I had to undo very bad habits and over time, managed to reverse diabetes completely just by changing the way I ate and putting in time exercising.
We don't realise the amount of strain we're putting on our bodies by carrying extra weight, all the fat around our organs. And at the end of the day, we all want to be on this planet for the longest amount of time possible, so we can enjoy this one life we have.
Don't make the mistake of thinking it's not that bad, because one day when you're lying in that hospital bed, being treated for something that could have been avoided just by changing your habits, you'll wish you had done something to help yourself sooner.
A healthy body is all about habit building, overriding bad habits with good ones. It takes time, but wouldn't it be better to work towards a healthy body for old age than just a brief stint for a summer body?
Over the years, I've had conversations with hundreds of people about weight control, and I have yet to meet someone that hasn't tried to lose weight or maintain a constant, healthy lifestyle.
And in a more recent conversation, in speaking to one my clients, I hear about how one of her family members is currently on a weight loss diet where they cycle through different food groups.
One dark side to social media is that we get to see the sheer magnitude of the amount of absolute nonsense out there when it comes to sustainable weight loss. It saddens me to no extent to see so many people struggling with their weight and their lifestyles, spending thousands of Rands a year and wasting their precious time on earth, because they follow what they think will solve their problems.
There is one very simple, very clear answer guys: to lose weight and keep it off, it has to be done in a personalised manner and slowly, in the right way. The problem arises with the fact that we live in a fast-rewards based society and that's what people want.
Here's the honest truth: if you want to lose weight quickly, then there are hundreds of "diets" you can try. I can however promise you, they will not work. That weight will come back with a vengeance.
The only thing that works is changing the habits that got you to that weight to start with, and replacing them with new, healthier habits. And to do that you need to work through those or work with someone who will take the time to work through those with you. It's not actually about just changing your food, or exercising more. If your mind is not in it, your goals will never be able to materialise. You have to change the neural pathways so that the body will follow.
It just makes me so sad that there are people out there taking people's money and their time with promises of quick fixes, riding on their emotions of just wanting to solve the problem. There are people selling special drops that you put into your coffee, and promising you that you will lose 2kg a week. And the worst part is that people are so desperate for a solution that they buy into that. So so sad.
