Julia Kaunda from Modzi Arts Gallery in Zambia came in to scan some negatives of late Zambian artist Henry Tayali (1943-1987). Predominantly a painter, sculptor and printmaker, the gallery will showcase a new medium, recently discovered, that the artist had been working with. Tayali is considered to be Zambia's most famous painter.
The images scanned are from 1972 to 1977.
✨See these images at Modzi Arts Gallery stall at the Joburg Art Fair this coming weekend✨
Modzi Arts Gallery was established in 2017 in itself a growing voice within Contemporary Zambian art within African contexts and has been at the forefront of reframing the Zambian art market. Part of the annual edition of FNB Art Joburg since 2019, they strongly believe in the slow steady growth and innovative approach within Traditional and Contemporary African art as well as within the diaspora. Continuing to participate in the FNB Art Joburg is an expensive and stressful journey, as a not-for-profit galley. They seek to find alternative spaces to share stories that have not been seen on the continent and shine a light on artists they collaborate with in the context of Zambia and around the region. The gallery is a process based space that runs several artistic and curating residencies.
Throwback to printing for his show at Goodman Gallery, opening in Cape Town tomorrow 🎉
Repost: Opening this month in Cape Town: Mikhael Subotzky’s solo exhibition ‘Home Building Ideas for South Africa (or A Cape Town Landscape)’
The show includes new photographs, paintings and installations that inquire into the relationship between landscape, structure and time — how each is marked, recorded, imprinted and inscribed by images, which in turn carry the trails and traces of these abstracted social constructions.
🗓️ Opening reception
Saturday, 17 August from 10:30
🎙️ Artist talk at 11:00

Invisible Threads are the Strongest Ties, a compelling survey exhibition into the artistic journey of Ayana V. Jackson over the past decade and marks the artist’s first major exhibition in Mexico.
The exhibition features a selection of photographs from various series by the artist, including Archival Impulse (2011-2013), Dear Sarah (2016), Wild as the Wind (2015), Intimate Justice in the Stolen Moment (2018), Additionally, it will unveil an exciting new body of work from the most recent series You Forgot to See Me Coming (2023).
For Jackson, this exhibition represents a homecoming. Her journey into photography began precisely in Mexican territory, where she portrayed Afro-descendant populations in the Costa Chica and Veracruz in her series African by Legacy, Mexican by Birth. While this series is not part of the current exhibition, it marked a pivotal point in the evolution of her approach to photography.

Two new Highway Notice’s have been installed for the month of November featuring artists Sindiso Nyoni and Oratile ‘Papi’ Konopi
On the M2 West Freeway, facing traffic travelling West, Faraday, Johannesburg you will find a new work by Oratile ‘Papi’ Konopi.
Here we have a quick introduction to the artist and the thinking behind his work.
‘NDIPHENDULE- Answer Me (+27) BUA LE ÉNÉ - South Africa Talk to her/him’
Oratile ‘Papi’ Konopi is a multi- disciplinary visual artist, writer, and curator with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand. Konopi is a curator and integral part of the BKhz Studio & Gallery based in Braamfontein. Konopi’s work is influenced by his daily migration between different spaces, multiple communities and ‘positionality’.
The piece falls within a body of ‘Ênê’ (2017-), the Setswana genderless pronoun referring to ‘him’ or ‘her’, is an artistic body of work which Konopi initially developed as a way to begin to explore what he understood as a ‘matrix of masculinities’, and ideas which surround the masculine. The work became saturated with endless entanglements, ambiguities , contradictions and multiple potentialities of ideas around gender and sexuality. In these complexities, Bua Le Ênê (2018-) began to develop. This is a continuation of the Ênê series, and focuses on gender relations, thinking through the site of popular imagery and language to foreground a conversation around constructed gender relationships and how they are negotiated on a daily basis of people's lived experiences.
