Can you tell if this is a lab grown or natural mined diamond?
If you're able to guess correctly, well... it may have taken some luck 😉
Even trained jewelers can't differentiate between a lab grown diamond and a mined diamond by looking at it.
Why is that? They are chemically and structurally exactly the same. Despite what you may have heard, lab grown diamonds are REAL diamonds that come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.
The only differences are cost and how they are made. One was formed over billions of years in the earth's crust while the other was made in the matter of months, mimicking that same process in a lab.
As someone stated in one of our previous reels, "a flower grown in a field and a flower grown in a florist shop are both flowers, just grown differently."

Rough diamonds or salt & pepper diamonds? Which would you choose?
The ring on the left features a raw diamond maccle. These unique stones look like thick, flat triangles. When diamonds grow in a double crystal, they naturally form a triangular-shaped crystal. Due to their more flattened natural state and typically smaller surface area, raw diamond maccle will have more sparkle than other rough diamond shapes. Combined with a hidden halo, the sparkle on this ring really sneaks up on you.
The ring on the right features a salt & pepper diamond, in deep contrast to its bright white side stones. Unlike white diamonds, where inclusions are typically something to avoid, the "imperfections" in the makeup of this diamond are what give it character and one-of-a-kind beauty.

Radiant or cushion: which would you pick? ✨
At first glance, these two cuts are quite similar. Both have a square appearance and can come in elongated cuts like the ones shown here.
Cushion cuts have a much longer history, as they're modeled after the old mine cuts from centuries ago. With the improvements of diamond cutting technology, tools and knowledge in the years since, the cushion cut has transformed into what we see most today.
Radiant cuts on the other hand, came about in the 1970s and were intended to combine the brilliance of a round diamond with the shape of an emerald cut. And we're excited to say we've begun to see an increase in the popularity of this cut among our clients!

What's the difference between a moissanite and lab grown diamond? ✨
We recently shared some insights into what sets moissanites apart from diamonds. We still receive the above question often though.
Both moissanites and lab grown diamonds are environmentally friendly options for a center stone that will cost you less than a natural diamond. But what else sets them apart?
For starters, moissanites just aren't diamonds. If you're set on a diamond engagement ring, lab grown diamonds are a great option, as they are physically and chemically the same as a natural diamond. The ONLY difference is the process in which they are made.
For that reason, no one will be able to look at a lab grown diamond engagement ring and tell it apart from a natural diamond. Moissanite on the other hand has some subtle differences.
Because of the way in which they're created in a lab, moissanites are essentially flawless in clarity. There won't be any visible imperfections in your stone, so its a great option if you want a gorgeous stone in just about any shape.
They're also different in how they sparkle, emitting more colored light - which some liken to a disco ball, for better or worse 🕺 We feel this is the easiest way to tell these two apart in this reel.
While moissanite is one of the most durable gemstones, it is still second to diamonds and weighs a bit less as well (important to note when talking about carat weight of these stones!)
So if you want a DIAMOND for your center stone, we recommend one of our ethically sourced natural or certified lab grown diamonds.
If you want a beautiful, quality gemstone that will look similar to a diamond at a much lower cost, moissanite is an excellent choice.

Our Marcellina, shown here in platinum, will look just as white 10 years from now as it does here. Unlike white gold, which needs to be rhodium plated often to keep its colorless appearance, platinum is naturally white and low maintenance.
Since it's typically 95% pure, meaning it's not mixed with alloys to the extent gold is, it is also a great hypoallergenic choice.
There is also a difference in how the two metals handle scratches over time. When gold is scratched, the metal is lost, while scratching platinum moves the metal from one part of the ring to another, developing a patina finish.
