Carefully pour some hot water down the side of the cylinder and a line of condensation should appear at the level of the remaining gas. If no line is apparent, you can also wait a few seconds and run your hand down the cylinder. It will feel cool to the touch at the level of the gas. If you see no line and feel no difference in temperature, chances are the bottle is empty. Remember to always use care with the hot water.

Also, please remember that gas cylinders are designed to be “full” at 80% or just over ¾ of their total volumetric capacity. This means that a “full” bottle is never actually completely full because it needs to allow for the natural expansion of the gas if it gets warmer temperatures.

Safety for those who are new to gas, or those customers who are used to gas – it’s a good idea to read our safety tips.

If you’re new to gas there are obviously things which need to be carefully considered, like electricity, it’s a useful power source but its invisible and these days can be expensive. Then to those who are already used to gas, being used to something is dangerous because it often results in complacency. So take the time to read our safety tips, you may learn or be reminded about something

Safety Tips
🔥 Cylinder handling

Make sure to never store your LP gas bottle near a direct source of heat (such as a stove, heater, fire, direct sunlight or in a car boot for a long period of time). LP gas expands when hot and this can sometimes damage the valve, the hose or the cylinder.
Always try to transport an LP gas bottle in an upright position and not on its side. If it is in the boot of your car, try to secure it to prevent it from falling over, rolling around and possibly getting damaged (or damaging your car).
When using your cylinder, always make sure to place it on a level surface so that it cannot fall over easily.

🔥 Smell for a leak

In its natural state LP gas is colourless and odourless. To make it even safer to use, a very strong flavour is deliberately added.
If you smell gas, NEVER check for the leak with a naked flame.

🔥 Open all doors and windows to allow fresh air into the room.

Turn off the valve of the cylinder and if possible, move it outdoors (if not already outside) Allow enough time for all the gas to leave the room before re-entering.
When the smell has completely gone, take the cylinder to Gas Family and have them check it professionally.

🔥A good ventilation system is required when using gas.
When using a large gas appliance (room or water heater, for example), make sure the room has good permanent ventilation.

🔥Regular check

Regularly check the rubber seals (washers) on the valve, the appliances and the connecting hoses. If they are worn, don’t attempt to repair them yourself. Take your cylinder to Gas Family or nearest LP gas dealer for a free safety check. If your cylinder has been involved in a fire, don’t attempt to use it. Have it checked by your dealer.

🔥 Before lighting your appliance

When lighting your appliance, always first light the match or lighter and then turn on the gas supply.

🔥 If there is a fire

Firstly, don’t panic. Try to turn off the valve of the bottle using a damp cloth or towel to protect your hand. Then use the same wet towel to smother the flames. If you cannot reach the cylinder, move everything that could catch alight away from the bottle. Call the Fire Department and tell them that LP gas is involved.
